Comparison and feedback on 18" vs 20" wheels

Hello,
The 18" wheels are not common on vehicles found on the dealership lots which means the likelihood that I can test drive a vehicle with 18" wheels is slim. Are there any owners of 2014 GC's on the board that are willing to share feedback or regrets?

Thanks,
Bob

Greetings from down the road in Woodinville. Do you plan on any off-roading?

Re: Comparison and feedback on 18" vs 20" wheels

Why are you wanting 18s and not 20s?
Off roading, looks, price of tires?????

We got the 20s swapped to 18s as we don't like the look of the 20s, found them too bland. They handle fine, the tire itself is pretty crap, first time I have wanted a tire to need replacing, but so are the stock 20 tires too.

Thanks,

Did you even try? The first 2 dealers I looked at in you area have multiple vehicles with 18" wheels.

Get out there and drive a couple!

Re: Comparison and feedback on 18" vs 20" wheels

Before ordering my 2014 GC Limited 4x4 V6, I test drove a Limited with 18" wheels, and an Overland with 20" wheels. No question, the Overland with the 20" wheels handled better on the street than the Limited with the 18" wheels.

Since my Jeep spends 99% of the time on the street, for me it was a no-brainier...20" wheels for the win.

Re: Comparison and feedback on 18" vs 20" wheels

I love the 20's on my Jeep but man they scuff and curb easily. There are too many high curbs and small streets where I live.

Re: Comparison and feedback on 18" vs 20" wheels

I originally test drove an Overland with 20's and bought a Limited with 18's. I did swap the tires with under 100 miles as the stock ones kind of suck. I have had no issues with the 18's and feel very comfortable with them. I as well think the 20's look kind of Blah but the SRT 20's are sexy! I'm glad I stayed with the 18's as I think there is more tire choice staying in stock size than the 20's.

I have the 20s and hate how easy they are to scuff. Even scuffed them on a deep pothole once. I also dislike the tires. The AT ones I'm accustomed to from my 05 were far better in snow.

Re: Comparison and feedback on 18" vs 20" wheels

I have a limited with the 18's. Personally, I do not care for the looks of the 18" wheels that came with vehicle. I like the looks of the 20's, but do not want 20's for my vehicle. I would rather have a more rugged look, so I bought a set of YJ sahara 18" take offs for a very reasonable price. Out of all the 18" YJ wheels I see, I like the look of the polished 5 spoke the best. Waiting on 3mm shims to come before I put them on, maybe I'll need the shims maybe I won't. You know the story. Hopefully, I like them better than the stock wheels, if not no big deal. I think I can get another 30k off the tires that are on them, and just sell the wheels for a couple hundred.

Re: Comparison and feedback on 18" vs 20" wheels

Its pretty simple: 18s will give you a better ride (higher, softer sidewalls) while the 20s give you better handling (shorter, stiffer sidewalls).

Not always true. Tires are the big variable. The OEM Forteras in 20" at least in my opinion suck in comparison to the OEM Michelin Latitudes. I wonder if any of the car mags have skidpad results and slalom times for WK2s with 18 and 20" wheels. Back to back on the skidpad there probably isnt any difference maybe a couple hundreths and slalom times maybe a tenth if that. Since most of dont push are Wk2s hard enough 20" wheels just mean a greater chance of bending a wheel. If you go off road even on dirt and gravel roads 20" wheels may have mores issues than 18". Real world you aint going to drive from Dc to Atlanta any faster on 20" wheels than you will on 18".
