You guys kill me. "My Jeep has been dead reliable, so obviously CR is bought and paid for." "Yeah and my friend had a Buick and it was piece of crap, so that proves it!"

It's like when my wife says, "How can it be raining? There was only a 45% chance!"

Re: Consumer Reports Apr 2016: WK2 the worst of the worst. What's wrong with CR mag?

CR

Is for non car people, who cant think for themselves.

Most cant interpret their data, and the sampling they use is skewed since the reports are from their readers, not a "random" survey which needs to be used to eliminate bias.

Also, they dont really point out and define, what is a defect?

Does A "rough ride" comment( from some idiot who buys a 3/4 ton truck but thinks it should ride like a luxury barge) and is included as mark against the truck, is it the same as a blown transmission?

Or how about someone who wont read their owners manual, who then bags on the control and telematics in all the new cars?

A statistical guy can shoot all kinds of holes in their survey, which is all it is, an Opinion Survey, yet they pawn it off as some ironclad blueprint on quality.

Re: Consumer Reports Apr 2016: WK2 the worst of the worst. What's wrong with CR mag?

I quit subscribing to CR years ago when I finally realized how politically correct they'd become. I find better long-term testing info on cars in the true car mags (e.g.; Motorweek). I find better reviews/ratings on everything else in the reviews on amazon.com (if you exclude the ones that received a free product in exchange for their "unbiased review"). If Jeep gives me a free '17 GC SRT for my unbiased review, they'll certainly get a glowing one!

^^Precisely.

You can tell from reading their reviews, that they don't know their butt from a hole in the ground about cars. Wranglers get ragged on continually about rough ride, crude, rudimentary design etc and Jeep can't build'em fast enough. And they hold their resale value better than just about any other vehicle.

CR is good for appliances, and TV's. I say that only because I don't know very much about either. But judging vehicles on attributes that are completely unrelated to their intended purpose is like criticizing a fish for its inability to climb a tree.

So who else provides any actual data on reliability?

Re: Consumer Reports Apr 2016: WK2 the worst of the worst. What's wrong with CR mag?

Good info in the responses so far. Reading CR for autos is like reading Autoweek for toasters, okay yes for the most part. Completely impartial, if they receive car donations? Right. However I cannot say that CR is completely out of touch with their cars because two of the best cars I ever owned so far was a 1984 Toyota Starlet (KP61) and a 2001 Honda CR-V. CR rated them as excellent, and these two really were. Near bulletproof, they just ran and ran and ran. After putting 100K, 200K miles on them, I sold them and they kept on running.

I do suspect CR has a strong historical general bias against American cars and for Japanese cars.

What's the point?
CR noted that Jeep has extremely high customer loyalty... but every year about this time, yet another Consumer Reports thread starts.
For the same reason.

It is worth asking yourself why so many places push the extended warranties and are willing to sell at such low prices.

Perhaps they are aware of the huge profits available for a product that very few people ever need to use to the extent where there is a loss for the seller.

Similar to life insurance.
You are betting you will die and your survivors will get big bucks.
The insurance company is betting you will not for the life of the policy and they keep your money.
The odds on you actually dying are the premiums, plus a good profit for the house.
Granted they make about as much money investing your premium dollars as they do on the policy... but same idea.

Not really.
They just have different priorities and methods of "measuring"
An issue in recognizing voice commands weighs as much as an automatic braking system malfunction that results in an instant doggie style mating with that semi behind you.

Since I'm 76, it's going to outlive me for sure.
