It's all relative and holds meaning only to the individual. For me, I have had reliability on all Jeeps I have owned (1998 Cherokee, 2004 Liberty, 2014 JGC).

I love my JGC, but eagerly await the Grand Wagoneer!

Consumer reports thinks every vehicle should have quiet and smooth ride. SUVs and trucks are too "bouncy" and sports cars have too much road feel.

I remember when CR got a new Corvette to test years ago. They said the exhaust was way too loud and the acceleration was dangerous. Of course, if it had a Toyota badge on it, they would have called it the perfect sports car.

Re: Consumer Reports Apr 2016: WK2 the worst of the worst. What's wrong with CR mag?

Coming up on one year ownership of 2015 Hemi overland.

Had the Unconnect reflash for hacking, and the rear 1/4 trim replaced for poor fit and finish.

I suppose I should go have a CR temper tantrum and tell them how lousey WK2's are because it had 1 defect and 1 recall so they should place it on their "Warning Do Not Buy List".

Funny thing is I have an 02 WJ and look on craigslist, I amazed at the number for sale private party with 150K-250K miles for sale.

If Jeeps were such a pile as CR indicates, how the hell did all these WJ's last 14+ yrs and 200K miles???

I'm not sure but I think that's based pretty much on number of problems reported, even if they all fall in just one or two categories. (But it might be a "prediction.")

For the 2015 (early days for reporting, but there it is), it's Much Better than Average in almost every category. "Trans, Minor," "Noises/Leaks" and "In-Car Electronics" are rated only Better than Average.

I'm gonna take my chances on a '17.
Well, I'm not sure what their beef is with "Power Equipment". The only issue I have with the power equipment is how much of it doesn't have a manual override for when power isn't available, such as the rear gate (which you might need to open to get your jumper cables out) or the passenger seat, which is sitting over the battery.

As far as the "In Car electronics", that I can buy into. I'm very disappointed with how poorly thought out and useful the Uconnect system is, from the GPS to the lack of useful on road apps to the lack of ability to download updates wirelessly. Further, the lack of ability to customize more things is lacking. It seems like they spent more time incorporating things you pay a monthly fee for along with telling you how dangerous using the system is, than actually making the system really useful.

Based on how much more the 8.4N system is than the base system, I feel like I got jacked. Unless the system improves measurably in the coming years, I will not be suckered into making the upgrade on my next vehicle.

Assuming all the rest goes well, that will hopefully give them a good decade to become better. Hopefully the fit and finish will improve, too. The paint isn't exactly a class A job, either. I'm pretty well OK with everything else, though.

Re: Consumer Reports Apr 2016: WK2 the worst of the worst. What's wrong with CR mag?

What more do you want the Uconnect to do? I am amazed at how simple and intuitive it is to use, note I am an Engineer and see the garbage foisted on the utility industry and crap I am stuck working with for controls.
written by dumb arses who cant write software so it is simple and intuitive for the end user/customer.

As far as the GPS, gets me where I want to go. My friend has a BMW X1 with there tech and nav package, 2K adder or something like that and he says it sucks to use. Went on a day trip in the Jeep with the wife, him and his wife(also owns a BMW and Porsche) and they were amazed how simple the UConnect was.
They said the BMW and Porsche are a Kluge of touch screen and knob input to get anything to work and it is a PITA to use.

I guess you will never please everyone on the Nav systems. Note I have only used the UConnect since all my other cars are much older.

UConnect is awesome IMHO. Looks good, works good.

CR just wasn't paid by Fiat/Chrysler.

It's not so much there's a lot that it doesn't do, it's that it doesn't do a lot of what it does very well.

1) It's slow to connect to phones and if you remove that SD card with your music collection it, it'll be forever before it's ready to respond to voice control for them again. Further, it lacks the ability to simply add additional tracks with your phone or another memory device. You can't build a playlist on the fly.

2) You can't customize or personalize the look or control layout outside of the few measly backgrounds they give you. I should be able to add any background image I want (provided it conforms to the necessary properties), change the color theme and even have a couple of extra screens I can customize to put whatever controls I want on them.

3) I should be able to add more apps. For example, it would be nice to add apps for vehicle diagnostics, fuel expenses and other travel related items.

4) The functions you get for some $20 a month with the UConnect service are lame. Even the app based remote start is terrible. You tell the car to start, then you can go have lunch before it does.

5) The lack of ability for it to connect to WiFi hostspots, even my home one, is a serious oversight. It should be able to connect to my home wifi so it can update the telemetry in the app (mileage, tire pressure, service information, etc) to be the most recent and accurate information. The app/web based information is always far out of date.

6) Related to the above, the Jeep should be able to receive system push updates automatically when connected to your home WiFi network. I should have to either a) go to the dealer or b) request a thumb drive be mailed to me. It should work like any computer update - silently, in the background.

7) The system allows you to change a lot of settings, but lacks several customizations that some people might like:

  • The ability to auto-lock the doors when the keyfob leaves the range of the vehicle.
  • Soft buttons for the custom power seat controls, etc instead of two hard controls on the door. I should be able to set up as many profiles as I have keys for, not just two. Likewise, I should be able to apply a custom name to each fob and allow or deny access to the vehicle with any one of them as conditions require (such as a teen driver that is grounded from driving)
  • More control of lighting on and in the vehicle.
  • The ability to use a previously register phone as a key fob in the event the key fob battery dies or it's lost.
  • The ability to lock out the transmission from exiting park if the key fob leaves the vehicle while it's running.
  • The ability to turn off any warning sound.
  • The ability to utilize the rear camera as a cargo/trailer camera while driving.

As someone who has used both Garmin GPS's and various free phone apps, I can tell you the built in GPS is seriously lacking by comparison. The high cost to buy it and update it is seriously outrageous for what you get, too.

With all the other options, I can plan a route off line, customize it, then load it into the GPS. Further, those other options are far more up to date. Even the free app based GPS on my phone is updated almost weekly.

Re: Consumer Reports Apr 2016: WK2 the worst of the worst. What's wrong with CR mag?

I have had my 2015 GC overland for about a year and a half. In the first couple months, a sensor went out so they had to replace the whole transmission. In the past 6 months they had to replace the drive train and sway bar trying to get rid of a noise they could not figure out. The drive train was cracked. Needless to say, I was not happy at all with my GC. After being in for service for the third time, I told myself, I am getting a new car. I test drove the BMW X5 and the new Volvo SUV. Neither of them felt as comfortable as my GC. They were both much noisier on the road and just did not have the feel that my GC has. Sure they had more bells and whistles, but it made me appreciate my GC more. I think I'll keep her.

Re: Consumer Reports Apr 2016: WK2 the worst of the worst. What's wrong with CR mag?

Damn, CR has hated my last 3 vehicles. Two JKU's and now the GC. I guess I suck at picking vehicles. Oh well, Ive had a lot of fun and spent a lot of money building both my JKU's and now I'm enjoying not modding my GC other than floor liners and a Canvasback. It looks incredible and rides fantastic to me. Now there are things I hate about the GC especially how fidgety the transmission seems to be. Sometimes its smooth as glass and other times it jerky and bumpy. Even my Rubicon felt better. Hoping it continues to smooth out.

Re: Consumer Reports Apr 2016: WK2 the worst of the worst. What's wrong with CR mag?

Aren't CR results based on owner feedback?

The feedback here would indicate that Jeeps don't have more problems, but that Jeep owners are the biggest cry babies. Owners of other brands must have learned to just suck it up.

Just sayin'
