Consumer Reports Apr 2016: WK2 the worst of the worst. What's wrong with CR mag?

The Consumer Reports annual car issue is out, April 2016. Every year in April they dedicate the April issue to cars. On page 83 they list the worst of the worst. They list over 30 makes (manufacturers) there, and one or more models of those makes. For Jeep they list

Jeep
Cherokee '14-15
Grand Cherokee '07, '10-14
Liberty '06
Patriot '08, '14
Wrangler '06-09, '12-13

These, according to CR, are the Worst of the Worst. Not only that, but the Grand Cherokee is listed in red which they say means it's Über Worst of the Worst. Especially terrible. Take a look.

What is wrong with CR? Do they use bad science? Is their data biased? My 2014 diesel is an excellent rig. It is my first Jeep, and I've been aware of CR rating Jeeps low year after year after year. I knew it was a risk buying Jeep, but after 2 years (and okay some teething pains with the diesel), my wife and I love this rig. It is a great rig. It is darn-near perfect. Since buying a Grand Cherokee I've noticed many older Grand Cherokees still on the road along with other Jeep vehicles, so they're out there, still running. And yes I realize the WK2 started in '11.

What gives?

Must be a lot of stupid Jeep Owners like us who buy poor quality and unreliable vehicles.

I never pay much attention to CR, it is a LCD magazine for people who cant think for themselves.

Reality is, if the worst model has 2 defects vs the best at 0.8 defects, is one that much better?

Does CR rate long term durability??

IMHO, buy a warranty contract, do the preventative maintenance, and drive it for 15 yrs til the wheels fall off, and ignore CR

I'll bet a lot of the complaints were about the electronics in the vehicle. But that's pretty common across all manufacturers these days.

CR bought and paid for. 1 of dozens personal experience is my dads Buick LaCrosse was ranked #1 when he bought it. 8 months later it scored very low
They are bought and paid for, end of story

I'm not try to come off as a dick, but aren't you going through a buy back right now? I've also had an SRT bought back. Maybe there's something to it.

I've had really good luck with my past three wranglers though. two 12's and a 15'.

Yeah, but out of however many millions of Grand Cherokees have been sold, how many have been bought back? Counting out all other model years and only including 11-16, how many?

I agree, CR is bought and paid for. They raved about the new GC when it came out, and now they're dogging it. My '16 will be my 4th Jeep. I will readily admit they have quirks. My '01 Cherokee had a check engine gremlin. My '12 GC had QC issues, it took 2 dealers months to fix my windshield whistling, then I had to have the headliner replaced because of it rattling - the dealer figured out that it didn't fit right. My '14 has gone through 3 sunroof motors and controllers, plus every recall and a few other odd and ends.

That said, at the end of the day, all of them have always gotten me home safe and sound, through multiple accidents through the years. None have left me stranded on the side of the road or in any kind of weather. Buy extended warranties and you're covered. I'll keep on buying Grand Cherokees until they turn it into a car or stop making them!

I'm not knocking jeep. I've owned five. Six if you count my old 46', but you here a lot of talk on here about buying extended warranties. It's not exactly a confidence booster.

On my lemoned 15' it had shifting issues, leaking headlights, exterior trim falling off, all with less than 3k miles. Again, don't get me wrong I love my Jeep, but didn't buy it because of its reliability.

Sounds like the QC guy at the plant fell asleep on the job, kinda like my '12. To be honest, I think I'd buy an extended warranty on most new cars. Too many electronics to hose up and take the rest of the car with it. My parent's '15 GC had to get towed with 3000 miles on it because it wouldn't start - they were visiting us from Nebraska, wound up stuck here an extra week waiting for the dealer to figure it out, wound up being a bad brake module or some such. Ford, for example - there is no possible way I'd drive one off the lot without an extended warranty. Same with anything European.

"Beautiful new Jeep! Did you get the extended warranty with it?" Seems to be a common greeting here. I didn't get the extended warranty because I just don't put that many miles on my SRT. I only put 2,200 on it since last spring, but to be honest I'm feeling like I'm going to be regretting my decision if I keep it long term which I plan to do. I really like this vehicle

I kept my '12 for 13 months, then traded it for my '14. I've had my '14 for 3 years, this month. I'm *planning* on keeping my '16 for awhile, but we'll see. Only real reason I'm trading my '14 is I decided I really wanted the Lux package and the Hemi was calling my name. I like the looks of the 75th Limited, so that's what I got. I have the lifetime maxcare on my '14 which'll be pro-rated back and FCA is giving me a lifetime on the '16.

Re: Consumer Reports Apr 2016: WK2 the worst of the worst. What's wrong with CR mag?

I went from owning one of Consumer Reports "Most Reliable Brands" Lexus to one of their "Least Reliable Brands" with a Jeep, and received quite the opposite.

I owned a 2014 Lexus IS for 2 years and in that time i had 2 headlights replaced due to leakage ($1,250 each if it wasn't under warranty), 3 separate instances where the battery died with no explainable cause, a paint defect out of the factory (Would've cost $1,000+ to fix), and a navigation system that loved to crash at the worst possible time. Compared to my Jeep which I've owned for a little over 7 months that has been issue free, which is ironic because i paid for the Lexus and only leasing the Jeep because of their respective reliability ratings.

When i mentioned i was selling my car for a Jeep to the GM of the Lexus dealership he must have referenced the Consumer Reports Reliability Rating that he had poster sized version HANGING ON HIS WALL about 3 times during our conversation and i reminded him the car i had was far from reliable.

In the end its a selling point for some manufacturers but far from a standard that should be used seriously when purchasing a new car. Every make and model are going to have issues, i'd be more concerned with how the receptive manufacturer is known for handling problems when they arise.

Our Lexus dealer has the we are the best signs everywhere. Snack counter/salesmans desks/writers desks....everywhere. They remind people to put in good surveys and if you can't say nice things they'll just give you some free stuff to make ya happy again so you will say nice things, LOL. The 50+ bay shop has no shortage of work. For this I am quite thankful, since the fact that they break down so often and have so many recalls is what makes us live very comfortably and can have cool Jeeps

I read CR at Gramas house....I also read the Sunday comics there....pretty much the same thing, they both make me laugh.
