The Nissan Pathfinder is a new design car, and a twin to the Infiniti JX/QX60 Wonder if it started off well and was downgraded, or always at the bottom...

Ok thanks.

Nissan at lowest is a surprise.

Agreed. We've had at least 1 Nissan for the past 19 years with very few issues over the years. I did notice when my issue came on today the Infiniti was rated higher.

My parents, sisters, uncles, etc. have all had Nissans. My sister still has her 18 year old Pathfinder. The automatic transmission Altimas and Maximas seem to last as well. However, Nissan still has issues with the Murano (transfer case). I had a 2003 Murano for 10 years and 165K miles before repairs were going to cost too much and I bought the Jeep.

My thought is that Nissan produced a good quality product until they started to become popular and had to expand production. They also have not kept up with the trend towards better quality cabin materials and the integration of electronics. Then again, some of this may be due to the earthquake that Japan had in 2011 and the economic downturn.

Personally, I think that the 2014 Jeep is a higher quality product, despite the growing pains.

I feel for those unlucky few who have had a horrible experience with their Jeeps but, if nothing else, they made the product better for those of us who, through luck, patience, or design, bought one late enough for the major bugs to have been worked out.

Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

Little surprised to see Nissan all the way down there as well. I have a friend that has a new pathfinder (work car) and when I got in it I was surprised at the features it had, seemed pretty nice. As I looked around and more closely it was no were near the level of the GC in terms of options, quality, etc - not to mention that stupid CVT and zero towing capacity.

Either way, still surprised its at the bottom, wonder if their is a primary culprit.

Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

From what I understand its the CVT that is the culprit. There have been multiple documented issues with bucking and torque converter failure. The other little things that have popped up have been fixed with programming or recall notices. But, as you all can see with the JGC rating, is enough to knock it way down.

That being said, we have a 2013 Pathfinder and it has been a great SUV. It hasn't given us a single problem in the year and nearly 12k miles we have owned it. Typically we drive a car till it has no value, don't know that we'll do that with the Pathfinder, but so far so good. At minimum we'll drive it till the warranty runs out, the dealership we purchased from extended ours to 7yrs/80k miles.

If it's any comfort, our 04 Murano has been flawless in its 91k so far. Only issue we've had is a bad ground wire.

I keep waiting for Nissan to extend the warranty like they did for all those other CVT models. It's not comforting to read about all the issues that the Pathfinder has but it doesn't keep me up at night. We have the warranty for now and I wouldn't buy a vehicle I couldn't afford to fix later.

My wife loves it too. I mentioned the possibility of maybe getting something else and she looked at me like I was crazy. It's been a good SUV so far. For me, the only things I don't like about it is that the rear glass won't pop open so you have to raise the whole rear to gain access to the back and I just don't drive it enough to get used to the CVT. The non-shifting can be unnerving at times. The wife says she doesn't even think about it, just that it drives smooth.

The GC will be my wife's car (replacing her Murano). I'm already anticipating her commenting she can feel it shift and the steering is lighter. She loves the Murano, and would probably be getting another one if they were different than what we bought 9+ years ago.

Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

My 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland was built in early April 2013 and has all options. By December 1, 2013, it has been driven about 7, 600 miles. Overall it has been reliable except for UConnect, EVIC (Electronic Vehicle Information Center), and Forward Collision Warning (FCW), all of which have persistent, unresolved, and annoying bugs, despite having the latest Chrysler software and firmware updates. FCW's false alerts are a safety issue; the other issues are frustrating and irritating. A $50,000 vehicle should be better. I regret buying it.
