Utter nonsense. You have no basis for making this sweeping generalization, other than "total bias" on your part. Who reported all the JGC problems that resulted in CR removing their "recommended" status?

I just love it when someone says "mine works fine, so obviously no one else should have a problem with theirs."

The "bias" in CR, lies within human nature. We are often hesitant about telling, spreading, posting the good news, but we are more than motivated to shout out our personal "wrongs" or bad news.

Just look at the news.... If it bleeds it leads.

To quote Metallica.... Sad, but true.

OK -If we go with your premise - then there is no statistical bias toward any individual vehicle. Therefore validating reliability data.

I would also submit the possibility that many subscribers actually have positive bias because they want to feel good about their purchase. Additionally they don't want to negatively impact resale/trade-in value.

I think CR would mke more sense if they gave their data, AND reported the % of owners reporting. Much like election returns are reported.

IF a large percentage of owners are responding, obviously the results mean more

... And those that say mine is broken so everyone or a huge portion of the population must be broken (please don't take this as a chance to argue everyone has an issue with the tranny or everyone's head unit has died, because we both know it's not true).

Well, that's that whole "statistics" argument. About large enough sample sizes, self selecting responders, incentivized answers, blah blah blah. I am not a subscriber, so I do not get a survey, so I can not speak to their methodology.

However, there's this:

From: Understanding Reliability Ratings | How Cars Perform Over Years - Consumer Reports

Quote:
It's based on CR's annual surveys of our approximately 7 million magazine and website subscribers. These surveys ask about any serious problems they've had with their vehicles in the preceding 12 months. They generate hundreds of thousands of responses—the 2013 survey, for instance, provided information on 1.1 million vehicles—which give us a solid foundation for our reliability Ratings.
Considering "national polls" that apparently help sway national policy are based on roughly 1000 answers, 1.1 million responses is a pretty good sample size, make them "statistically significant".

Also, they've shown in the past where they don't have, in their opinion, enough data.

More interesting will be the long term 2, 3, 4 year data on the vehicle, after the shakedown and bug patching has been done.

That is what I think it is.
I rented a Limited V6 for a week. No issues with the electronics, but I found the trans seem to shift a bit harsh at times, certainly not as smooth in its operation like the 8-speeds in several LX cars I've driven.

I tested both a Diesel Jeep and Hemi Durango recently and in both the trans shifted very smoothly..like butter!
Now I did also try a V6 Durango too and it seem to shift as well, so maybe it was a software issue that has been straightened out now. Also interesting to me is the Durango is rated 18mpg city vs 17mpg city for the Jeep. Updated software helping here?

I bet the trans issues are with the V6's and the home built 845 and not with the ZF built 8hp70's.
Also very good possibility the issue was just with software and has been addressed. Should know for sure by Spring.

Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

Guys, you are forgetting the important details. A minor problem with some system or part of a car may be reported as a failure, putting it in the same category as a major failure. That is the problem, and it is compounded by surveying people who know little or nothing about cars. CU could fix this, if they wanted, by simply asking how much money was spent on repairs, instead of asking about failures.
