I think it has more to do with the quality issues the US automakers have historically suffered from. It's human nature to believe that future performance can be predicted base on past performance.

Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

There are problems with the Consumer reports survey as in all methodology. But it is better than anecdotal reports. I prefer truedelta methodology to evaluating vehicles. Unfortunately true delta also finds a LOT of problems with the JGC

CU could fix this, if they wanted, by simply asking how much money was spent on repairs, instead of asking about failures.
Also, most of the issues were either with a faulty brake module (which is fixed), or early versions of software for various modules (which are also fixed). I can't speak of the transmission issues on the V6, but on the V8 and diesel, there are no issues. The UConnect updates have fixed most of the bugs with UConnect, but they are always upgrading (as does Apple and Windows) - all software has glitches and updates - thus the price we pay for living in a technical world. 99% of the JGC is awesome, but unfortunately, people tend to fixate on the 1%, which Jeep continues to try to fix. Unfortunately the earlier builds had some issues, but that have been resolved. The current builds are coming off the line with no known issues.

Flame suit on....

I agree that the Jeep should not be on the list check it out.

2012 Overland August 2011 Build Overland Problems:

Headliner pulled for annoying sunroof rattle TWICE (was never really fixed)
Quadra Lift Controller replaced.
Rear Shocks replaced (TWICE)
Alignment from factory was wrong. Tires on front ruined after 5K miles
Dashboard replaced because of bubbles. Replacement dash look different
After dashboard, trim piece by windshield bowed (after 4 replacements)
Jeep wouldn't start a couple of times in the morning (but eventually did)
Annoying clicking at 10mph from either transmission or axle never found.
Annoying Hemi engine tick all the time. I guess this is normal? Whatever
Most the interior panels have a reddish color to them and it looks bad.
Replaced lower knee panel 4 times because of color problem.
Dealer damaged my wheels when aligning, with alignment heads. Then lied
Supposed to get 15MPG. BS I never got better than 12. Perhaps less

I don't think I got a "lemon" either. I have seen people all over these boards talk about the same issues listed above. I think its just what Jeep is today.

^^ This.

I've said before you live by technology, and you "die" by it. Any automaker can get a batch of bad parts from a supplier, and who knows what else can happen.

As for software glitches, when was the last time you cussed out your computer?? (LOL, I hear your answers Mac users...Never!)

We took a step out there when we bought our 11. First model year, and it's been great. (I should've filled out a feel good survey!)

People get what I've termed "analysis paralysis", and these forums, while helpful, get scary for some.

My philosophy......Just get the vehicle you want. IF you are gonna lose sleep over it, make sure it has warranty while you own it. IF it's a dog, you're not married to it....get rid of it.

My business partner got an BMW X-5 and it had tech glitches, the sunroof never worked, and got stuck open! BUT, it was a Beemer!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sucks that you had these problems, but the issue in this thread about CR dropping the JCG rating is related to the 2014's, not the 2012's. Sounds like you also need to find a new dealer, as they are either causing some problems, or not fixing the problems.

A lot of the issues I hear about cannot be blamed on suppliers. The ZF supplied transmission appears to be less problematic than the Chrysler built equivalent in the V6. The misaligned doors and tailgates are an issue with the assembly plant.

Doors were not misaligned. I took a tour of the factory, and saw what was exactly the problem. It had to to with the lower rear bumper being misaligned, and the tail lights being misaligned. Both issues have been fixed. Look at the lines from the rear, and you will notice the gap along the top is the same on both sides. Easy fix on both accounts. There is a reason people say not to buy the first quarter cars in a new model year. The bugs need to be worked out, and now they have been worked out.

Either way those issues are caused by poor quality control at the plant, not supplier issues.

I was alluding to the fact, at times bad parts can be a problem. In the end, the manufacturer has to take the heat.

Certainly body panel alignment and other issues are not necessarily a supplier problem.

I agree. Chrysler is responsible for CR's downgrade, no one else.

Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

Hello All, 1st time poster but a Jeep 2nd owner of an '04 Wrangler Unlimited, 28k miles that I tow behind my motor home. And therein lies my dilemma. I need to replace my daily driver, an '03 Pilot and also need it to double as my new tow as I will be selling the Wrangler. Just don't need 3 vehicles. The GC fits the bill perfectly. I wanted an Overland bad, so much so that I put a deposit on one this weekend through the DC group buy. I wanted the new technology, the air suspension, heated wheel and those LED's. Man are they cool! Then my business partner asked me about the repair record. I was so impressed with the GC I neglected to do my homework on the truck itself. So I came across this forum and the other one and read about all the issues with the GC. I know about the trans problems on the V6, the Uconnect, and other troublesome issues. What a flashback to my '04 VW Toureg days. I'm also reading that the problems seem to be with the earlier builds and there have been multiple updates since, however it doesn't seem that brand new owners are reporting anything yet, at least I have not read about it. I'm quite cautious about the fact that owners are saying things like, "trucks been great so far with 10k on it" or "get the lifetime Maxcare Warr and don't worry about it"(paraphrasing here). Don't know about you all, but warranty or not, rental car or not, I don't need to be running back and forth to the dealer, assuming I've even found a competent one to service the truck. My Pilot has been flawless in the years that I've owned it. So, with 271,500 miles on it, I took back my deposit and dropped off the Pilot at my local transmission guy for them to put it's first replacement in this week. I will just keep driving it until something less boring than a new Pilot comes out. Don't get me wrong, my intention is not to bash the GC. I am actually REALLY disappointed about not getting the truck. I love everything about it but need a reliable driver and the Pilot has set the bar really high. It's not totally out as a choice of new vehicles, but until some real world good news about the GC comes out, it will just have to remain at the bottom of the pack. Now, unless you all can convince me otherwise....
