Guys, I don't know why anyone responds to jdshaw anymore. He/she/it joined last July and has been spending a great deal of effort posting practically nothing but negativity. Every time some magazine, person, or source says anything negative whatsoever this person gleefully posts a thread.

What makes no sense (unless you think about it carefully) is that he/she/it started out here, from day one, talking about "negative reviews on KBB, Edmunds, CR" and "red flags." Yet, would then say "considering purchasing"...and blah blah. Do a search on all the posts. Almost all are either starting some thread to this nature, or are adding something to a problem thread...of course mentioning "red flags" and so forth. Why, with all that, the GC would even be in the running until just now is ridiculous.

I'm willing to bet he/she/it either continues to post these things (even though the decision was made), or disappears and another user pops up with a strangely similar writing style or story about "I'm considering purchasing but all these negative reviews and red flags..." Yada yada yada. Rinse, lather, repeat.

Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

As the OP for this thread I figured it would be interesting to check what CR is listing as problem spots with the 2014 model currently -

As of today the website shows everything is much Better than average except
Transmission (minor) which is better than average
Drive Systems which also is better than average
Power Equipment which is average
Audio system much worse than average

What this says to me is overall the Radio hardware and software is causing the poor rating. With the latest new hardware, fixes at assembly and more software updates hopefully that will improve.

I do wonder if CR is grouping "Radio stops working" with "My windows 8 phone won't stay paired" as issues. Yes they are both issues but the first one to me is major and the latter is minor and they should be treated as such.

Back in the early 90"s CR dinged the BMW 3 series because it didnt have cup holders. All the 3 series owners I knew who also tracked their cars laughed at this. CR is one source when considering a vehicle purchase.

I agree, it's one source and best to look at the ratings breakdown also because IMO Engine and Transmission issues usually are a lot worse than the Radio doing odd things though on a lot of new cars it's the interface to most of the systems so that's changing.

I love this feature!! Mine was built in Jan. 2014 and I just assumed this was Chryslers FIX for all the early model year Jeep GC owners who were experienced walking out to their Jeeps only to find the tailgate wide open. It was speculated this was occurring because the FOB tailgate button was being inadvertently pushed while in the owners pocket. One solution other forum members offered was to buy a FOB specific sleeve/case which required more effort to push the buttons. So when I brought my new ride home 5 weeks ago I double clicked the tailgate and nothing happened and I thought damn it doesn't work. I pushed it again quickly and presto it opened. So I smiled to myself and thought Chrysler engineers came up with a very simple solution to the phantom tailgate open syndrome. The double clicks have to be done in quick succession or you have to start from scratch. The odds of accidently doing the 4 clicks(in quick succession) while in the pocket is very remote (no pun intended)......................HOWEVER..........If the vehicle is UNLOCKED it only requires a single double click to open the tailgate. FWIW that is how mine works and personally I love the feature.
It is supposed to operate (whether locked or not) with 2 quick clicks on the keyfob. That's it. Anything else and its not operating as designed. So in your case, according to the 1st part of your reply, your vehicle isn't operating properly. But if you're happy with it, that's all that matters. But it's not operating correctly.

And also thanks for the reply.

Thanks. It doesn't matter if I'm 1 foot or 30 feet away. Once the vehicle has been sitting for about 10 minutes, it doesn't operate at all until 4 clicks on the keyfob are performed. When I only perform the 1st double click, I can hear the module(s) in the vehicle waking up, but the liftgate doesn't open. When the 2nd double click is performed, then the liftgate opens. I have a feeling one or more of the modules in the vehicle is faulty.

I also occasionally have the problem where I lock the drivers door using the door lock switch on the armrest. As the vehicle is locked, I then close the door and as I walk away, the vehicle unlocks itself. Sometimes I can be 25 feet away when I hear it unlock itself. Also doesn't matter which pocket I keep the Keyfob in, it still will do it. I then use the keyfob to lock it which is annoying since I have it set to sound the horn on locking. But at least then I think it stays locked. My previous 2012 Overland operated perfectly for both of the above situations. Never a problem.

Also occasionally, as I near the vehicle at times from 10-20 feet away, the vehicle unlocks itself. Obviously happens before I could possibly reach the door handle.

Other than that, which is annoying since the vehicle is nearly a year old, I love the vehicle. I just wish Chrysler would take some time and do some research on this problem. My dealer can't do anything because when they contact Chrysler about this problem, Chrysler doesn't have a clue what to do. It's really sad.

Operating properly according to what? The manual? There are tons of errors and omissions in the manuals. Unfortunately, it isn't the final say in proper function.

My understanding is that the 1st double click or unlock wakes the electronic controls in the Jeep and the 2nd double click opens the liftgate. It is what it is. Its consistent on newer MY14 builds from all I've read. These machines are programmable and updatable...but the manuals apparently aren't.

Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

The Uconnect thing does deserve a very low rating, as it does not do common and useful things the Pioneer unit I bought in 2006 could do, such as allow you to choose sub-categories of POIs (e.g. show just one restaurant chain). However, the voice recognition does work well, one you understand that it is picky about phrasing, and needs the city and state in addresses. The "find nearest ---" function works, but does not display them on the map, so you wind up choosing ones which are behind you when on a freeway.

Has anyone here had any problems with the 8-speed transmission? It and the V8 are a wonderful combination, and I'm sure more people would buy GCs if they would drive them, and try the various modes (eco, normal, sport).

I spoke with Chrysler Care in Detroit and they said my vehcile isn't acting as designed. They should know, or at least I hope they know how the vehicle is supposed to operate.
