Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

Well... it wasn't jus the JGC that was mauled by CR:
http://video.msnbc.msn.com/nightly-news/53399413

That being said, I wouldn't be shocked if the issues around reliability were more related to UConnect than anything.

What I really wish CR would do is break out the ratings.

One dot represents thousands of mechanical and electrical systems, and has a massive impact on buying decision process.

Just because the UConnect system was wonky at the get go, doesn't mean that the engine will fall out of the vehicle.

I don't know how you could knock CR's auto reviews. Didn't they love the Chevy Vega?

I wonder how Consumer Reports would review Consumer Reports?

Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

Keep in mind that Consumer Reports reliability data (not their reviews) comes from actual vehicle owners. So really, the data has to be somewhat accurate. An argument can be made that it may be biased, but bias exists for all people, not just people who buy specific make/model vehicles.

Though it's not detailed down to what exactly people reported the CR website shows multiple categories for the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee:

Much better than average for almost everything

Better than average for Transmission minor (Transmission major is show as much better than average) and Drive System

Average - Power Equipment

Way below average - Audio System

I would guess that the electrical gremlins and uconnect/radio glitches are what's driving the rating down. Now if the "fixed" electronic hardware/software being sent to service centers to fix these issues works as intended, and the 2014.5 models have the fixes installed from the go one would believe that ratings should improve.

I don't always agree with CR on what they feel makes a great product but I do agree they are getting the data from owner surveys so it's probably not being slanted but I wish they would show the criteria and results to arrive at a rating.

Seems Ford products featuring the mytouch system are not well liked at CR or it's respondents either. I read an article today saying the user interface to new cars is becoming a major factor in how people judge their vehicles. Consumer Reports: Infotainment System Woes May Be Underreported | Auto Makers content from WardsAuto

I think it say's a lot about most new vehicles that a lot of major new vehicle complaints concern the radio/infotainment center which to me is a lot better than what people complained about in the 70s, 80s and early 90s about new vehicle issues. As manufacturers add more features/capabilities they have to make sure the support system is in place to assist customers with those systems down to the dealership level because we now live in a day and age where some people may feel not being able to pair a mobile device to their vehicles radio is a major issue.

I
That was a good read and spot on IMHO. My father for one has the limited explorer and doesn't have any real gripes with the unit, but when I get behind the wheel; there is a clear lack of user "friendliness" about it.

Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

CR ranked my 2006 Ford Explorer V8 low, yet it was the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned, and I had it for 163,000 miles.

I suspect that many or most CR readers know little about cars, so a minor issue such as the toothed sensor ring on one rear half-shaft which broke on my Explorer may make them think the brakes, electronics, or drivetrain somehow failed, when it was an inexpensive part which cost little to replace, even though I had a Ford dealership do it.

I think the correct way to view the Grand Cherokee, especially the loaded versions, is this: $25,000+ less than a comparably-equipped European brand SUV, such as the M-class on which it is based.

Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

I'd be interested to see a break out of what reliability issues were seen. Some transparency would be nice.

Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

Consumer Reports criticized the Grand Cherokee for not being able to extend the sun visor. Which is completely incorrect, so I have a feeling that Consumer Reports is wrong about a lot of things, especially vehicles and I can't believe people give Consumer Reports so much influence.

I laughed when I read that. Every vehicle I ever owned, dating back to the '60s had that 'feature'. I guess the CR tester was too weak to move it.

Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

I sure as hell trust Consumer Reports more than any other source when it comes to vehicle ratings since a lot of the data comes from the owners themselves. So what if the "little things" might be dragging down the curve...I fault the manufacturers even more if they can't even fix the little things.

It funny hearing some here say CR is bias towards Japanese cars...if you want to see what bias is, pickup an issue of Car & Driver or Motor Trend.

Didn't CR just bump the Toyota Camry off their best buy list?
