Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

CS Apr 13 issue does recommend the JGC check it out.
From what I read on the first page of the post this only encourages me to order my diesel.
I owned a Ford Super Duty for almost 10 years and never had problem one but CS said a piece of sh-t, go figure. Oh my Toy Land Cruiser excellent vehicle except for the transmission that failed at 79K miles. My Toy Avalon in the shop for 6 weeks for a climate control system failure and then the front suspension was missing parts for years, complained for years something is wrong. Low and behold Toy comes out with a kit to fit this 4 years after owning it. Yeah Asian quality was really good. In the end CS is an opinion if you ask me and not representative of fact.
Best car I have owned to date was my M3 BMW I just sold after buying it from the dealership and owned it 13 years, not one failure but a brake light switch.
The CS article actually paints this JGC as a nice ride.
Remember they change their standards of what is bad to good based on product improvements. They do this every couple years. Cars that got excellent 10 years ago would not make the list today...

Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

I want to restate what several others have written here: Consumer Reports LIKES the 2014 Grand Cherokee. If you listen to their web casts of the guys who do the testing, they're enthusiastic about it. Initially they recommended the 2014 Grand Cherokee because the reliability was "average." CR does not recommend vehicles for several reasons, but the most common are 1) lower than average reliability, and 2) poor safety ratings. Their reliability ratings, which is what caused the Grand Cherokee to be dropped, are relative and do change as the quality of vehicles in the same category change, which CR clearly explains in the small print. But ratings also change as CR gets more data from readers. The 2014 Grand Cherokee is now "much worse than average" in reliability based on their most recent batch of data and is therefore "not recommended." If, as some have suggested here, things have improved recently, that will eventually be reflected in the ratings too.

Whatever the reasons (CR doesn't say yet, but others here have speculated U-Connect), the reliability of the 2014 Grand Cherokee dropped in the most recent sample of data that CR got from readers. This is a fact, not an opinion. I propose that if you have another source of DATA, please present it here. I also looked at J.D. Power and their data show essentially the same thing: less than average reliability for the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Like many of you who have presented anecdotal accounts, I bought a 1999 Mercedes ML320 even though CR did not recommend it (because of less-than-average reliability). I liked the way it drove (so did CR, BTW) and I was in a gambling mood. My ML has been a reliable vehicle for the most part (I still have it), but I found CR's comments about how it drove, etc., quite accurate. And as the data have accumulated, it turns out 1999 MLs haven't been very reliable. In my decision to buy a 2014 Diesel Grand Cherokee I considered ALL of the sources of information--and opinion--I could find and have, therefore, gone back and forth about whether or not to buy the Jeep. Today I think I will, although it means a 700 mile drive right after picking it up. Concerns about reliability, such as CR's latest report, have therefore been foremost in my mind.

I don't see much point in bashing CR. It is what it is, and most informed people understand that. I have found it to be one of the few objective sources of information available to me. Whatever you may think about CR's "biases," you can be relatively sure they aren't due to pressure from advertisers. I found it interesting, for example, that the Motor Trend and Car and Driver comparisons of diesel SUVs came to essentially the opposite conclusions regarding the Grand Cherokee. I wonder why?

Cheers,

Jim

Consumer Reports recommended the 2014 JGC in August based on their road test and other subjective evaluations. The latest report re-states those positive impressions. CR's "standards of what is bad to good" are not the issue here. This week's report is based on real life data from 2014 JGC OWNERS. There is nothing subjective here. There are problems with the transmission and electronics. Anyone who reads this forum, or jeepforum.com, or edmunds.com, or kbb.com - knows that.

The transmission issue was fixed with a software upgrade, as have most of the U connect issues. Like I said, most 2014 JGC owners are NOT running with the latest software upgrade to U connect.

That's honestly the biggest issue I suspect.

Most users buy the rig off the lot and never again think about software updates. Only of the dealer pokes them over it would the user probably have any idea that the software CAN be updated in modern vehicles, let alone that a software flash can completely change how a transmission or such works.

And honestly, I think most new cars (I'm looking at you Ford) are getting hammered by the new infotainment systems not being up to par.

As transmissions gain more and more gears, the mapping of those gears and shift points will become more and more of a delicate balancing act. Folks were used to 4 gears with high revs and getting slapped around, as we move more and more transmissions to 6, 8, 9, 10, 12 gears people are getting more and more used to the smooth shifting patterns. So, if anything is off, they will make a stink over it.

Re: Consumer Reports Drops Grand Cherokee Recommendation

Is there a way for the vehicle owner (not shop) to have the U-Connect display what version of software is in it?

Yes. In the evic under settings.

Just because the UConnect system was wonky at the get go, doesn't mean that the engine will fall out of the vehicle.
So, on the way home last night, my Uconnect lit up like an Xmas tree and it isn't even Hanukkah yet. Then I heard this horrible crashing sound and it
felt like I drove over a tree--then the engine noise got really quiet and it stopped.

Aww c'mon, ya push the button at the end to spray all over the front.
Then you twist it toward you if it didn't get dry enough.

The second little stub ring will spray all over the rear window but start the wipers too soon for my comfort.

I tend to agree, I preferred the old rear control from '95, as if you live in SoCal, you
probably never see enough rain or even mist to get used to the new one.

It isn't the worst example of a multifunction stalk, but just be glad it doesn't also act as a gearshift, evic display control, station selector, etc. etc. and don't give them any ideas either...

Allegedly it was the Fiat chairman that strongly suggested Jeep doll up the GC interior a bit.

I haven't driven a 500, but I have driven the heck out of some really nice Fiat coupes in Italy and they'll hold their own against the VWs on the 'strada.

Its almost like Tony is looking for work as a Maytag repairman.
