I'd really like to know what percentage of 2014 Grand Cherokee buyers are experiencing problems and if they are serious. As much as I respect Consumer Reports, they aren't providing that level of detail on the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee yet.
As much as I respect Jeep, I wouldn't buy one if I didn't have a good local servicing dealer. Stuff happens and a dealer who genuinely wants to sell me yet another vehicle and is willing to demonstrate that is critical to any buy decision.

Consumer Reports reliability data comes from Consumer Reports readers and subscribers.

That does inject a certain bias if you have any knowledge of their history.

Not saying that Jeep could not use a good baseball bat in how they handle their inbound vendor stuff and quality checks, but CR definitely has a bias defined by their target market and some former leaders.

I suspect that many or most CR readers know little about cars, so a minor issue such as the toothed sensor ring on one rear half-shaft which broke on my Explorer may make them think the brakes, electronics, or drivetrain somehow failed, when it was an inexpensive part which cost little to replace, even though I had a Ford dealership do it.

I think the correct way to view the Grand Cherokee, especially the loaded versions, is this: $25,000+ less than a comparably-equipped European brand SUV, such as the M-class on which it is based.
Most reliable vehicle I've ever owned was a 95 ZJ, well down on CR's list.
And that's over 19 years worth of owner. Never scared to hop in it and head cross country... which I did just before trading it.

65 Corvair Corsa [another CR non-favorite] and 66 427 Impala SS were right up there for being able to just hop in and drive, and run forever till
i got tired of them.

On the other end of the scale was a '73 Porsche, which almost competed with a 66 MGB for being a money pit.

People who know autos don't get auto advice from CR any more than people who know electronics don't

Yes.
Press "Apps" or "Settings" on bottom right of screen and follow the menu displays to System Information. [the intermediate screens are just a tad different]

The upgrade instructions are available at UConnect if your VIN passes, or you could
upgrade membership and get them from Willx

Pretty much every car I've ever driven was a POS according to CR.. makes me wonder what these magical perfect cars are like.

...probably dull.

I think the Lexus ES330 was a top car in their list when I test drove one. It was.. clinical. Very clean, everything was nice, but... man, it was detached. It was like driving my grandmothers car.

...so I bought a Jag. Lots of issues, but DMAN that thing was fun.

When you have new design between mechanical and Computing, there are bound to be a few glitches. Most of these glitches have now been now fixed. It was a problem with a break computer connected to the main computer. The newer ones are not having problems. Also, a lot of owners have not gotten the updates on the computers. Check back with us after 30000-40000 miles. My 5 speed transmission "feel apart inside" at 38000 miles. It was a tried and true "old" transmission. The 2014 has the new 8 speed, not a long term fixture in Chrysler's power trains like the 2012's 5 speed. My pentastar head failure and 730n failures could be due to "new" systems, neither of which were "small problems" for me and the many other owners still having issues.

I think that is the same 5-speed as in our C230K, which has 64,000 miles on it. Too bad you got a bad example. The 4L60E in my 1966 Impala SS failed twice, but other guys, included guys who drag raced, did not have transmission failures.

As for the 8-speed, it is not a new design, as BMW and probably others have been using it for some time.

I assume you realize the 8 speed in the v8 and diesel are straight from ZF and is the same 8 speed used in everything from BMW, to Rolls, to Bentley, to Audi, etc. It is a very well traveled, tested, and respected transmission. The one in the v6 is licensed to Chrysler by ZF and slightly different.

Received the 12/13 Consumer Reports today - and it's even worse than the preliminary information. JGC (V6) predicted reliability is an astonishing 90% below average. Holy crap!

We should have a Jeep Garage get together at the Grand Canyon, and drive all our new Jeeps over the edge. Anyone who has a Jeep that won't make it all the way to the Grand Canyon, just push it into the nearest river.

We need to get these disasters off the roads and make America safe for the Toyota drivers.

When their reliability ratings distinguish between a wheel flying off the vehicle driving down the road from a text message not being sent right on the Infotainment system, let me know. Grouping extremely minor things with major things is a silly methodology.
