Question Crazy thing happened today ... U-Connect?

I had driven my JGC across town, parked it and walked a couple of blocks to check out some merchandise. As I walked back to the Jeep, I noticed a young couple standing nearby. I started to get in the car but they stopped me and said his phone had just been stolen at the gym and the tracking GPS on his other phone lead them to my car! One look at me and you'd know I don't go to the gym.

I opened up the doors to the car and offered to let them search. He called his number and nothing was heard. They believed me, to their credit, and I left them standing on the sidewalk quite puzzled.

The crazy thing, while driving across town earlier, I did happen to drive by their gym before this all happened. I've searched the inside of my car on the chance someone tossed it in an open window without me noticing. 98% improbability of that scenario raised to 100% after the search.

What happened? If his cellphone was not in my car, how did his GPS track his number to my car? Was the thief hiding nearby and just picked my car to bounce a signal???

It's more likely that the tracking program was giving a radius with your vehicle in the center. Their phone was probably in the parking lot or someone else's car nearby.

Or they were up to something....

The U-Connect wouldn't have anything to do with a random cell phone and even if connected via USB or Bluetooth the phone wouldn't use the vehicle's GPS.

The phone was in the area...perhaps hidden in your trailer hitch or not even in your Jeep...who knows. Perhaps their GPS data wasn't realtime and the stolen phone was in the area a few minutes before.

Should have made them prove it by showing you?

Who carries two cell phones with one being able to track the other?

My thought is they were up to something; possibly wanted your Jeep.

That, however, isn't so unlikely. I'm sharing lines on a family-plan and this is one of my favorite features.

Yeah it's a pretty common feature. iPhone's have it built in and android phones have several apps that let you track a lost or stolen phone. But some times it puts a dot on the map with a circular radius showing a proximity to the location, this especially happens when there is no gps signal (like in a building). This was probably what happened. The dot was on your truck but a radius around a nearby building. I would chalk it up to coincidence.

True. Sometimes, the radius exceeds a mile - and sometimes, I can even tell the lane my mother is driving on.

Find my iPhone is a great app but I have never seen it be so precise as to lead to a specific car
