Cruise control question

I have the regular cruise control. On Thursday I was travelling with it engaged at 55 mph. The section of highway (US 20) on which I was driving is continually up hill then down hill as it goes up and down the small valleys of bisecting steams. I realize that cruise control is not at its best on these conditions. However, occasionally, on the downhill leg, the transmission would downshift from 8 to 5 or 4 causing the engine to rev to 3000 - 3500 rpm. No big deal, but a little weird to me. Comments? Thanks.

Re: Cruise control question

Did that allow it to hold the set speed, or attempt to on the downhill? If so, then this is what it should be doing. Ours currently doesn't do it, but there is a service bulletin I need to have applied to make it do it.
My older cars did not do this, my current Ford does, and once you have a car that retards the speed on downhills to the set speed, it is very annoying getting in cars that don't do it.

Re: Cruise control question

Yes, this is just the cruise control engine braking to keep the speed down when going downhill.

Re: Cruise control question

Thanks. Yes, I was not too concerned about it as it did seem to be trying to slow the downhill coasting and it did not over rev. I never experienced this on my MY11 WK2, but never took it this far west on US 20 where the road is more hilly. Once again this forum has proven its value.

Re: Cruise control question

Does anyone know how to make the transmission downshift automatically and consistently on steep hills? Sometimes in cruise control my Jeep will down shift, sometimes not. Sometimes when not in cruise control it will downshift, sometimes not. I have the Diesel v6, if that makes any difference. I have not been able to find an answer in the downloadable manuals or on the forum.

My previous vehicle was a Ford SuperDuty Diesel, which had a "Tow/Haul" feature. If you activated that, just tapping the brake pedal would cause a downshift of one gear.

Do the Jeeps do anything similar?

Thanks

If I tap my brake going downhill, my transmission will downshift to help slow the vehicle down.

There is a service bulletin to fix this and make it more consistent
