Dash Issue - New car on lot

Hi

I've been debating a 15 or 16 Overland. The curiosity got the best of me and I have trade in deal I'm relatively comfortable with.

The car looks great, Diesel built in February, but there is an imperfection on the dash. It's at the front of the dash immediately along the left driver side. Photo attached. I'm doubtful it can be repaired without a full dash replacement.

I'm looking for opinions from the experts here as to how best to approach it. I'm suspicious that a full replacement of the dash would yield a perfect result. That seems pretty invasive. I'd be worried that the end result is worse than this. My other fear is that this gets worse over time and if I'm out of warranty I could have a hefty bill. Thoughts???

Also, any other things to be aware of for a Feb 15 build Overland Diesel? Was the DEF plate part of the build then? I wasn't able to get on my back and check it out.

Re: Dash Issue - New car on lot

The dash is actually leather and you will find some imperfections. However, that doesn't look like an imperfection, rather it is something that has a defined shape under the leather material.

Take a look at other cars with a leather dash.....don't buy it if you don't like it!

Re: Dash Issue - New car on lot

Maybe it's just the pic but it doesn't look like an imperfection to me either. For example, my dash has some wrinkling to the right of the pick where it curves for the instrument cluster. It annoys me.

This pic though, looks like something is under the dash.

Agree with your observations - it even feels like there may be something underneath moreso than a wrinkle.

Their service department is going to look tomorrow. How might you approach it?

Re: Dash Issue - New car on lot

It's not like you are shopping left overs. If you don't like the way it looks, pass on it. They will give you just as good a deal on another car. There might even be time to order.

Yesterday you hadn't even decided what year car you wanted. Don't let the excitement of a new Jeep, and what appears to be a good deal, cause you to jump the gun.

That imperfection will grow (in your mind's eye) every time you get into that Jeep.

Re: Dash Issue - New car on lot

How weird is that. I've had my '15 SRT for a few weeks now and I have that exact same thing. I'm taking it back to the dealer soon to see what they can do.

It does kinda suck that it's there, and yes even though I can't see it all the time I know it's there...I know nothing is perfect but I wish it was not there. I thought it was something in the leather itself, but seeing this it looks like a manufacturing issue.

I'll wait to see what the dealer says. Everyone has different tolerances though so each to their own

Re: Dash Issue - New car on lot

Did yours come like that or did it develop? This one is a Feb build - curious if there is any relation with timing of the build.

bill_de - I know I want an Overland, but I was going back and forth on 15/16. Given the changes for 16 look relatively minor, I'm more inclined to consider 15.

Yep. Definitely a pattern there. Feb build. We only saw it on day one after the sun hit the spot.

Re: Dash Issue - New car on lot

I would stay away from it. Like you stated, the dash probably has to be removed. Chances are, the dealer will not get it back to how the factory has it. If nothing else, you will probably have residual scratches as well as the possibility of rattles. If you had already purchased it before seeing the imperfection, it is one thing.

Re: Dash Issue - New car on lot

I agree with what's said above. To OP and user Womsirom, understand that if you bring that car in and have the dealership fix it, you know they are going to be manhandling the heck out of your interior, and even though it may look fine, I promise you there will be broken tabs, missing clips and screws, and probably slightly misaligned parts...in other words, even though the original issue will be fixed, things never go back in like they were originally. I avoid dealerships at all costs. Unless it's something I have no choice on, I prefer to avoid that kinda stuff.

OP, if it's already bothering you, just imagine how much it will be after to spent 45+ k on it and see it everytime you get in the car. Find another one, there are grand Cherokees everywhere.

Re: Dash Issue - New car on lot

I had dash imperfection on my 2015 Overland when I bought it. They replaced the entire leather dash. No issues after replacement.

Re: Dash Issue - New car on lot

I had a dash pad replacement and it was an abortion. Think about whether you really want to take the chance on the workmanship...

Cheers,
