That's what the DRLs on both my 1991 and 2000 XJs behave(d) in Canada. The headlamps lasted the life of both vehicles (9+ years each) without burning out. Of course, those use old style sealed glass headlights.

That is how GM and the current Chrysler cars do it. Older Chrysler cars use their high beams at full blast so if you see one driving behind you, you would think that some asshole has popped on his highbeams at you. I would like to meet the ass that thought that was a good idea

Its an awesome feature, I love mine.

but if you have the auto feature, wont the lights turn on automatically when its dark??

They do when it's dark yes, but there are times when it's over cast and still enough light so they don't.
