Question Dealer/Aquisition-Fee on a Chrysler Affiliate Purchase?

Hi,

I have a question for our experts:

I was under the assumption that under the Affiliate-Program, a dealer can only charge Tax/Title?registration-Fee and Doc-Fee in addition to the $75 Program-Fee.

I just sealed my deal and my paperwork shows a $599.75 Doc.-Fee, a $234.64 Registration-Fee and a $595 Aquisition-Fee.

My SA claims that the Aquisition-Fee is charged by Chrysler Capital and would have nothing to do with them. He also stated that this fee could only be waived by using an "EP"-number and not by Affiliate-program.

Does that sound right? I'm wondering because this Aquisition-Fee didn't show up on my initial lease-worksheet...

If aquisition-Fee is NOT to be charged under Affiliate-Pricing, could somebody provide me with some written guideline for that?

Thanks!

OK, it seems the Acquisition-Fee is indeed coming from Chrysler Capital - so everything seems fine!

Lease fees from a lender are not a dealer fee, as you've surmised. They do need to be accounted for relative to figuring out the true cost of the lease, however!

Thanks, Jim!

There are so many different types of fees that I obviously mixed them up...

Yea, an I suspect that some dealers finance folks get pretty creative sometimes...

It appears the "doc fee" is really an improper dealer fee. I thought under the affiliate program dealers can't tack on such fees.

Yeah, that's the confusing part. Under the program, only tax/title/registration- and doc-fees are allowed - plus $75 for the program-fee (which I wasn't charged on top of that - yay!).

So because I initially didn't know what the Acquisition-fee was (or who's going to collect it), I asked because I thought that was a so-called "dealer-fee" - but since it comes from Chrysler Capital, it's OK.

Unfortunately, Florida has no legal limitation on the doc-fee - as long as everybody at the same dealer pays the same.

I'm not complaining though because a got 2% below invoice as a compensation in a local market where deals like the group-buys are simply not out there.

Over the next couple of days, I'll open a new thread with tons of pics of my new ride with all the numbers. So far, I can say that I really enjoy it!

Re: Dealer/Aquisition-Fee on a Chrysler Affiliate Purchase?

^^^ Congrats on the new ride!

I did the DC buyers group and took the amtrak auto train back to FL. Was fun and saved a ton!

The "dealer fee" is not legit. When I bought my 2011 via the affiliate program, the FL dealership insisted they HAD to charge me the dealer fee - stating by law they HAD to charge everyone equally, their hands were tied. When I pushed back and explained to them they can not, they relented. All they have to do is knock an additional $599 off the affiliate price then add it back on to comply with the state law. You should get that back...call Chrysler on it. Dealerships must comply with the program rules, period.

Re: Dealer/Aquisition-Fee on a Chrysler Affiliate Purchase?

"Doc" fee is short for Documentation fee. It's nothing but profit for the dealer. I usually refuse to pay it, and if their profit on the deal is adequate, they usually don't argue ~I worked in two different dealership accounting departments for a total of 13 years.

You are certainly right.

However, I also keep in mind that IF the dealer would comply exactly with the rules, my deal wouldn't be much better. After all, Affiliate Pricing is set at 1% below invoice - and considering the $599, that's pretty much what I got. The price of the truck itself was 2% below - so that's basically a wash.

They also went the extra mile for me to make a dealer-switch for my CD-Player and my SA and the manager were super-friendly so I'll let them have those few bucks...

Now, if I would be paying 1% below invoice PLUS $599, I'd certainly be complaining.
