Re: Dealer says no one wants off road package

When I purchased my Limited in Feb none of the 4 dealerships I have visit have the ORAII on the Limited, so I settled on the 20" rims with sunroof and 8.4AN.

Just completed a 15000km trip towing a one ton trailer on rough dirt and 4wd tracks. Absolutely magic car on any surface.

I never said an Overland can't be found with the 18" wheels, I've just never seen one on the road without 20" wheels. Fact is most people who pony up $45,000+ for an Overland (at least here in the States) are not going to get one with the 18" wheels so they can go hard core off roading in it.

Re: Dealer says no one wants off road package

It's been a long time since I've done any kind of offroading and I don't tow anything.

My preference has always been to have QDII, the class 4 towing package and the Up-Country suspension package (ORAII today). I like HD components whether or not I have a need for them.

I haven't driven a QDII in a WK2 so I don't know how it compares with the QDII I had in my 02. That system used the gerotors in the transfer case and both Vari-Lok axles and could send 100% to any of the 4 wheels. I've driven a lot of 4WD systems and that one was hands down the best I've ever used in snow.

The class 4 towing package gave me a HD alternator, HD cooling and the receiver hitch gave me a little more structural stiffness in case of getting rear-ended by some idiot. For what little it cost, it was a no-brainer.

The UCS gave me HD springs and shocks, full skid plates and a slightly higher ride height. Again, for what little it cost it was a no-brainer. It also gave considerably better ride and handling qualities over the stock suspension. Anyone who's ever driven WJ's with and without UCS will know exactly what I'm talking about.

I like the look of my 20" wheels but was a little concerned about what the ride quality would be. Surprisingly, the 20's ride very smooth and I have no complaints so far. I'm sure the 18's ride even better. I have an Accord EXL with 17" wheels and low profile tires and it rides harsh, like a Campbell Soup can on wheels. Every crack in the road is transferred harmonically throughout the vehicle.

Talking Re: Dealer says no one wants off road package

GCLimited: I know - just couldn't resist . Most Overlands wouldn't go offroad here either. I just wanted a really comfortable, but serious (read low range, high clearance) 4wd. And I think this is the best there is for that purpose. Took me two weeks to get all the dust out though!

Not everyone needs or wants to offroad, I didn't by my Jeep because it says Jeep on the hood, I bought it because I like the package. Comments about minivans and "mall crawling" are extremely odd and show a complete lack of understanding about cars and target markets. If I drove up to a customer in a wrangler I'd probably get shown the exit.

It's a Jeep thing....you wouldn't understand.

Re: Dealer says no one wants off road package

I took my overland off road a few times.
And the reason that in buying another one is simple.
While 99.9% of the time I use 1% of its capability, on the 0.1% when I will need it! I know it is there and will take me back home.
And anyone that did any moderate off roading knows, that some times you get stuck, or the guy in front of you just ruined the worst part of a trail. And the difference between you staying there for the night or going home is some vehicle capabilities and some driver skills / or brute force.
Which is why the overland with factory off road is my car. I also added a winch to it, but it was only used once to up right a flipped Suzuki.
And although the factory off road tires are crap, everything else on the jeep worked flawlessly so far!

Regarding the Summit . . . agree, so added plates & hooks to my Summit; not too costly or difficult to install. For actual off roading, still needs 18" off road wheels / tires and an easier method of temporarily removing the lower air dam would sure be nice. If really serious - I'd add the Trailhawk style rock rails as well.

As mentioned in a previous post, "I'd have it no other way!" That's why they have options. We're all different, with different wants and needs.

Maybe it's just me but besides the off-road, when it snows and rains I feel much better in my GC then I ever did in the mini-van I once owned.

Re: Dealer says no one wants off road package

I didn't order my Overland with the ORAII package, but I did get QD-II and added skid plates after the fact. I wanted to keep the 20" wheels, which I liked better at the time than the 18" ones. However, I now like the 18" wheels better, and regret not ordering the ORAII package. I bought a Jeep and fully intend to use it as one. I've done some mid-grade off-roading and gone through some serious snow and ice, and the Jeep has handled beautifully. I'm definitely looking to amp it up in the coming months, and can't wait!
