Dealer Swap

I found the Grand cherokee I want but its 400 miles away. Does anybody know how the whole dealer swap process works and is that too far for a dealer to swap cars. I looked everywhere else and dont know if there is a way for the car to be delievered or would they drive it

Re: Dealer Swap

lamstang94, if you cannot work a delivery into a negotiated buy from the dealership that has the car in stock, just go get it via friend's lift, bus, or shuttle service if available.

it will be worth it to avoid an agonozing order wait. several of us paid circa $500 to have an auto delivery truck haul our rigs from 2-4 states away.

Re: Dealer Swap

Mine was ~250 miles away. I negotiated everything over the phone with the dealer, rented a vehicle for a 1-way dropoff, and my daughter and I had a fantastic little road trip to pick up the new Jeep. Stopped at some diners along the way, had fun taking photos and just spending time together. It was just about as perfect of a day as a guy/dad could imagine.

If you have found "your" vehicle, go get it! Don't even worry about a dealer swap unless it benefits you in some way. It may just complicate things. I ditched my factory order to go this route and have never regretted it. I empathize with the folks who are waiting for their factory orders, but in some cases, there are alternatives. Good luck.

Re: Dealer Swap

^^^ I've done the same thing several times....negotiate over the phone at a dealer within a few hundred miles. In 2005 when I bought my last GC, the dealer was fantastic, I got the best deal ever (30% off MSRP...a crazy good deal with all incentives brand new never even test driven), and they even offered to drive it to my house about 100 miles from the dealership. Instead, I said I'd pick it up and leave my old GC with them to perform a service bulletin and also oil change, etc. and have them drive the old one back to me when it is done instead....no problem. Was a fun trip...The wait on orders is silly long....

Re: Dealer Swap

To the original question, dealer trades are done all the time but there's a catch, your dealer must have something the remote dealer wants to "trade". Since a trade usually means the vehicle is in demand on both ends of the deal if your dealer doesn't have something similarly in demand the trade probably won't happen. Also, dealers try to limit their trades to a radius that's cheap to transport since neither dealer wants a "new" car with 50+ miles on it. Factor in the cost of transportation and it's pretty unlikely (re:impossible) that your dealer would be interested in doing a deal with a dealer 400 miles away.

Re: Dealer Swap

My friend bought a limited from a dealer that was really far away from him. The dealership he was buying from just bought the vehicle from the other dealership and had it picked up. The only downside was some employee got to drive his vehicle 300km. This would never fly with me

Re: Dealer Swap

Just got my new Overland from a dealer trade. I walked into the dealership at the end of the month and told them what i wanted to pay for the jeep (2% below invoice with rubber floor mats thrown in). They said the only Jeep that was black with new saddle interior left in Texas was 500 miles away. My jeep was there the next day for pick up with less than 40 miles on it.

You are the exception, not the rule, trust me on this. There was a lot more working than you have let on. It takes more than 1 day to arrange a swap like that if it already wasn't in process. That's a 1000 mile round trip for the dealer's transport company (they have to swap something, that's why it's called a dealer trade) and you expect us to believe they paid for the extra transport AND sold you the car below employee price. Sorry, I"m not buying it. There's more to this story.

Walk into a dealership here and tell them you want to pay 2% under invoice on an Overland that's in stock and they will shake your hand and tell you to have a nice day.

Re: Dealer Swap

Question, how can I research new Jeeps across the US other than going to a specific dealer site and see what they have? I would be willing to fly one way and drive back several hundred miles. The Jeep.com new vehicles restricts miles and isn't all that user friendly. I know exactly what I want, know they are being made but just can't find one and my order seems to be stuck.
