Yes, it's an "extended service contract" which, as you surmise, is legally a different thing than a "warranty". Many folks use the terms interchangeably, but, for example, here in the US, the Mopar MaxCare paperwork actually is worded "Extended Service Contract". The service contract takes over when the original warranty expires, although it may offer some benefits during the original new vehicle warranty period. Rental/loaner is one example that I took advantage of while I was still under 36K miles.
