Dealer trying to sell 30K mile maintenance

So I'm approaching 30K miles on my 2012 laredo. Dealer is trying to tell me I need a $1500 maintenance check. Obviously this is over priced but any recommendations as to what I should do at 30K (besides change oil)? I'm not mechanical at all so doing anything myself is not an option. Some people would say to spend the money to avoid bigger problems down the road. Any thoughts as to what is REALLY needed at 30K? Thanks.

Re: Dealer trying to sell 30K mile maintenance

Your owner's manual will have a list of those things that are necessary. That's from the folks who built the Jeep.

Your dealer will have a package that may or may not coincide with the owner's manual. But, will make him a profit. Profit is good and keeps the economy going.

The internet will yield you a variety of answers. Some good, some base on old fashioned ideas, some provided by over zealous car nuts, and of course, don't forget those that wouldn't part with a nickel to save their mother.

It's your choice.

What is included in there $1500 maintenance check? I can't think of anything on the Jeep that at 30,000 miles would require that much work but others may know better. Check your owners manual and compare to what they do. Also is you're vehicle a Hemi because spark plug replacement may come in to play.

I had a dealer try to sell me a full tune up at 5,700 miles once, I asked aren't they 65k plugs? Yes but we really recommend this, suffice to say I switched to a different dealer after that and other issues with their service department.

I find it interesting that you feel a dealership ripping off customers (charging for unnecessary work/parts) is just "Profit", and that it's good for the economy.

Not necessarily for the customer, right?

In my book thievery is wrong...whatever it's form.

Re: Dealer trying to sell 30K mile maintenance

$1500.00 seems a bit excessive. I honestly don't know the details of each engine though.

As long as it doesn't harm the engine/drive-train, doesn't void warranty and doesn't involve safety. I've been doing as little as possible the last 20 years or so.

Don't fix it if it ain't broke.

Timing Belts (only on cars that it will damage valves) and Oil mostly. Everything else I usually do when I see some evidence that it actually needs it.

Rebalance Tires, never; unless I have a problem. Usually if a wheel suddenly goes bad, a balance won't fix it. It has a broken belt or something.
Change Plugs maybe every 100K.
Rotate tires. I do that when I switch to snows and back, regardless of how many miles I went (usually 10K). I only rotate front to back (old school).
Realign, never, unless it shows evidence it needs it.

I don't think I've had an alignment done in 20 years (2 cars each avg 20K a year and kept 10 years). And I we live in a Pot hole state. They are probably the worst I've seen it this year.

Of course I do brake pads, rotors etc. as needed.

Generally there isn't much to do these days on most cars. Many cars are designed to go 100K with only oil changes, tires and brakes.

I will do all fluids (Radiator, Diffs, Transmission) around at 100-120K (at half life).

EDIT: I just double checked the Manual.

For 3.6L Only thing listed is replace Engine Air Filter at 30K. The rest is inspections.
Pretty much the same all the way to a 100K. Where Radiator Flush is done.

5.7L does require plugs at 30K. Seems really odd these days for it to need them so often. Maybe they get fouled due to MDS.

There's also an app for that which has the maintenance interval at 32K miles, and lists the recommended service.

Re: Dealer trying to sell 30K mile maintenance

Personally at 30K I would check, the tranny, both difs, and transfercase if any of them need their fluid replaced. I would also check the belts for cracking and fraying. and possible also check the coolant and air filter.

Re: Dealer trying to sell 30K mile maintenance

My MY2012 manual lists 32K for the maintenance interval. And aside from the required plug change I have because of the V8, everything else is really just basic services. No way can I see anything accounting for a $1500 maintenance outside of a very, very, VERY greedy dealer!

Most "quick lube" shops do that when you get your oil changed.

Many have accused me of "over maintaining" my vehicles. The OM for my Jeep doesn't recommend servicing the transmission, so I resort to ChyCo's police vehicle maintenance schedule, and do that at 50k miles.

I just bought all the fluids/ filters for the tranny, differentials and transfer case, and these ran about $200. The labor will be maybe two hours.

Re: Dealer trying to sell 30K mile maintenance

My dealer wanted to replace transfer case fluids At 28000km recently, he wasn't happy when I told him that jeep recommend inspection at 40000km, some dealers are at it andrely on you not informing yourself.

Show dealer the manual and tell them what you want.
