There is no reason not to switch to synthetic right away. There is no break in oil in these engines and the break-in period according to the manual is only 500 miles. Anything else a dealer tells you is suspect or based on old tech. The only reason not to switch to synthetic is cost and that is up to you.

As was stated by someone else, the SRT8 comes with synthetic from the factory. If synthetic is good enough for a performance engine from the get go, why would it be bad for a more sedate Hemi or Pentestar V6 ?

Re: Dealers says not to switch to synthetic until 15,000 miles

Changed mine to synthetic at 5K and been doing oil changes every 5K since. Sust hit 30K this week and doing great, time for my next change but may go to the 6K and see what the oil looks like, maybe even the recommended 8K if looks good.

Kendall oil with mopar filter I guess is worth the 14 bucks then buying 7 quarts of mobil 1 and Mobil 1 filter.

Re: Dealers says not to switch to synthetic until 15,000 miles

For what it's worth, Bergey's near here automatically uses a synthetic/dino blend, $29.95 for the change/filter. Nevertheless, I still do my own changing every 5k miles and use M1EP which with filter costs more than having Bergey's do it, but for most the blend should be plenty good. We do about 1,500-2,000 miles/month, so I want this buggy to be in A1 shape several years ahead and not trailing plumes of blue smoke and having gummed-up valves.

Re: Dealers says not to switch to synthetic until 15,000 miles

I have used Mobil1 5W20 since the first change at 1500 miles. FWIW, Mopar oil filters are no better and no worse than Mobil1 filters. Tear each of them apart and see for yourself; they are both excellent. If you are as anal as I am about vehicles, changing oil yourself enables you to inspect the front end and ensure the proper oil is being used every time. Some dealer techs may mistakenly use something other than 5W-20 which can, but not always, lead to a malfunctioning MDS that is rectified by a proper 5W-20 fill.

Re: Dealers says not to switch to synthetic until 15,000 miles

I'm warming a seat in the waiting room at our dealer (Bergey), waiting for repairs and staring at their price list for oil changes, using synth/dino blend: $19.95 one-time, $14.99 per for four, $12.50 per for 12.

I'm anal enough to stick with do-it-myself M1EP even if dealer changes were free. But it's easy to see where most folks would spring for the $12.95 blue plate special both for price and laziness.

This is my first oil change after 1000 miles of break in for a wk2 with a 5.7 Hemi.

They say they use Kendall but I've never heard of it and always just used Mobil 1. Any reviews on this oil? Or compared to Mobil 1? Can I switch over to Mobil 1 years down the line when I move?
BMW, Mercedes and Porsche all call for Synthetic from day one. You're dealer is an idiot!

Re: Dealers says not to switch to synthetic until 15,000 miles

As long as the oil is 5W-20 either syn or reg is fine at any mileage, this talk about break in period of for a model A Ford. As long as the oil meets the Mopar Spec it's ok to use at any mileage. I have 2 of these with Hemi's and both are running syn at 1,000 miles and since. no problems what so ever.

Switched today at 1,100 miles after about a month of owning it to full synthetic which was about 15 bucks more all told with the free semi synthetic deduction off the price.

I was told I get 2 free oil changes a year, or 4 if I follow the maintenance guidelines they have in their service book, which after looking at it is alot more then is needed.

Looks like I'll atleast get 2 free oil changes a year and whenever else I need it I'll do it myself.

I wonder if it matters if I go back and forth between Mobil 1 and Kendall synthetics.
