decisions....decisions (3.0 vs. 5.7)

Looking for some advice on engine selection. For starters this will be my daily driver and occasional off road play toy. I live in Houston so its pretty flat terrain and a lot of bumper to bumper traffic.

On one hand I like the idea of the 3.0 eco-diesel for its long range driving capability and torque for towing (but I won't be towing very often). I like the "tunability" of turbo diesels but I've never been a fan of the smell or the sound of a diesel engine. I did enjoy the one that I took on a test drive but the lag was kind of annoying in stop and go traffic but I would probably get used to it eventually.

The Hemi has always been an engine that I've liked and now with the 8-speed trans. it gets pretty good mileage. My current daily, a 2014 4x2 Ram gets 18mpg on my daily commute and 20mpg on long highway drives......still a far cry from the 3.0 eco-diesel mielage. Then there is the sound, I love the way the Hemi sounds.....especially with a nice set of headers and a Corsa cat back.

Whatever I get I plan to do either the Old man EMU or the Icon suspension lift (that's if they accommodate the new 2016 suspension)
32" tires and 18" wheels
RRO winch mount and super sliders

I probably won't be doing much rock crawling (never been before but it looks fun) but I will be doing some light trail and sand dune running. This reminds me, I've never owned a diesel before so I'm not sure if it would be a good choice for sand dunes?

Let me know your thoughts.

I can't give you much of a direct comparison, but I would say that I love my 3.0. The only smell I ever notice is the filter burn off now and then and it is a little louder than the 3.6 (which I like), but I'd otherwise rarely notice it is a diesel.

It tows like an absolute beast and will push you back when you put your foot into it. Every once in a while the turbo lag does catch me off-guard but I'm pretty well used to it now. Overall I'm thrilled with my choice.

You are unsure about a diesel and know you like the Hemi ... hmm

I'll give you my "not" unbiased opinion. Friday I ordered a '17 Summit complete with HEMI.

Re: decisions....decisions (3.0 vs. 5.7)

Were I buying today, I'd seriously consider the EcoDiesel for the combination of fuel economy and towing. I'm not "unhappy" with the HEMI (and that was my only available choice for the towing at the time) But the towing is about a half percent of my drive miles and at least 75% of the remainder is highway.

My suggestion is to try and arrange an extended (overnight) test drive of the EcoDiesel so you can actually do your normal daily routine with it. You already know how the Hemi acts, more or less, although doing the same with a JGC Hemi isn't a terrible idea in the interest of direct comparison.

Re: decisions....decisions (3.0 vs. 5.7)

I've had the Hemi in pretty much every GC I've had since 2006...and currently in my '13 TH. I've always loved having that extra power, but 100% trading in for the 3.0 TH in a few months. I've taken the diesel for a test drive a couple of times and love it. I cannot wait to have both the power and mileage. I don't tow though, and drive mostly on the highway/rural roads...

Re: decisions....decisions (3.0 vs. 5.7)

So today spent a few hours thinking about what I need and also reading reviews. This is my conclusion and by no means do I think my opinion is the end all of opinions but this is what will work best for me.

Originally I was thinking that the diesel was what I wanted, the idea of all the power with greater fuel economy sounded to good to be true. But the more I think about it the more I think the Hemi would be a better choice. Let me explain, from what I've read short trips in "real world" stop and go traffic with the diesel doesn't really achive that great of mileage.....still better than the Hemi but with diesel fuel costing more than premium fuel the savings would be a wash. Most of my travels are on the highways but it's pretty slow going do to congestion. I've already mentioned the turbo lag; and dealing with Houston traffic I need something that will get up and move and move when I want it to. The Hemi will flatout accelerate the Eco diesel from a dead stop and passing power is greater also. This is a much needed asset to effectively maneuver thru Houston traffic more often than not.

To me the only real benefits of the diesel is its towing ability and fuel economy on long drives with sustained highway speeds. Neither of which would really apply to my usage.

Sounds like you made the right decision. Love mine - it's been trouble free since I took delivery in Sept. '13.

Re: decisions....decisions (3.0 vs. 5.7)

When I started looking for a used JGC last year, it had to be the 5.7L Hemi. I found exactly what I was looking for at a dealer 2 hours away and it's been a near-perfect vehicle. My MPGs range from 18-20+with 75% highway driving and keeping it below 70 mph.

And, to get rid of any pause in the throttle, get a Sprint Booster. Wonderful mod.

Re: decisions....decisions (3.0 vs. 5.7)

good choice you wont be disappointed with the hemi. The 2016+ 4x4 hemi is rated at 22 mpg on highway and you will get a bit more than that on a highway cruise you'll be surprised at some of the numbers when its chugging along on 4 cylinders on the highway. also unless you are towing or in super hot climate it does just fine on regular.

Being a owner of a EcoDiesel and reading your intended usage of said vehicle, I would encourage you to look to a gasser v/s an oil burner.

True, but it's even better if you consider that the Hemi doesn't want or need premium...it runs great on 87. (89 "recommended", especially if you are working it hard) I've never run anything other than regular with my MY12 and it's at 72K miles.
