As Pogo once put it, we have found the enemy and he is us.

We've put in office folks who are, step by step, shutting down domestic petroleum exploration so they can pressure us into driving their beloved electric golf carts. If this is what we want, this is what we'll get, and in time you can kiss the Jeeps of the world bye-bye.

Re: Demand is so HIGH......

I'm sure that ex oil exec still has plenty of stock in whatever oil company he worked for... and would love to see $5/gallon gas.

I can't stand these speculators.

Great news? Yes and no. Depends upon your perspective.

Great news for those who will don't mind high gas prices and want to buy a new SUV. Dealerships will be forced to discount them highly in order to move them off the lot.

Not so great news for those who already own one and want to sell or trade it in. There won't be much of a market out there, so values will be in the toilet.

Great news for those who would rather not see many other similar vehicles on the roads.

Not so great news for those who invest in auto manufacturer stocks, especially those who rely heavily on SUV/truck sales.

Not so great news for those who work for auto manufacturers, especially those who rely heavily on SUV/truck sales.

Not so great news for the economy in general.

Re: Demand is so HIGH......

all this is purely speculative.....even if backed up historically. This Jeep is 10x the jeep a wk was. The wk never sold well becasue the general public didnt care for it...gas mileage, looks etc. The public likes this Jeep. Although Im sure $5 a gallon would turn away a few potential owners...it wont turn away all potential buyers the way the WK did. There is alos a hybrid system in the works......

Diesel is the gift that keeps on giving. It improves mileage, yet usually outlasts gas engines. And unlike trendy hybrids it doesn't need $10,000 worth of batteries in seven years or so. Imagine resale prices as the time approaches for battery replacement!

Alas, unlike in Europe where diesel is taxed less than gasoline, over here it's taxed more because it was once thought of as being strictly for commercial use. Equalizing taxes on the two types of fuel, and making up the revenue loss by imposing an offsetting direct tax on 18 wheelers, should turn the situation around in a hurry.

Imagine a fuel efficient GC with a tough, torquey diesel -- gotta love it!

Re: Demand is so HIGH......

I have talked to Phil Jansen many times and he mentioned it in the JG engineers chat....there will not a be a diesel in the GC line up anytime soon. US govt. Regulations are to tight and its not cost prohibitive to put a current diesel in the wk2. Hybrids are where its at and new battery technology is coming out daily.....Imagine a gas/electric hybrid with upwards of 400 hp

Agreed. If you look underneath the spare tire area (bottom side of the WK2) there is a large area that IMHO is going to be utilized for Hybrid applications. There is plenty of space underneath, and SUVs, CUVs, large trucks are probably the best application for a hybrid; I'm thinking along the lines of a small, efficient turbine spinning a generator to power an electric motor at each wheel. The technology and the potential sales volume is there to do this so long as it is marketed correctly.

Lexus has a similar system on their GS450 that is a complete rocket and gets like 25 mpg's in city
