Re: Development delays hit most Chrysler products

I'd rather there be delays so they can work out most of the issues than have to deal with all the issues with an early release like the refreshed wk2.

Agreed, but the article implies strategic or financial issues.

So wouldn't existing issues with current platforms call for strategic planning and be the cause of financial issues?

Re: Development delays hit most Chrysler products

Mostly minor 6 month to 1 yr delay, and all speculation with no facts.

Personally I would rather they keep the WK2 and LX cars as is for a while.
No need to trash really good platforms for the sake of change.

But get your hemis while you still can!

Sure, if I understand you, but there have also been rumors that FCA is sniffing around for a merger partner. GM reportedly already turned down a meeting with FCA CEO Marchionne. It could be they want to push back the development schedule to hang onto liquid assets to better lure a suitor.

Re: Development delays hit most Chrysler products

If you look at their original 5 yr plan presented in 2009 and then what actually happened, you(and the media) would see that they delayed things on that plan.

Per sniffing, they are probably always looking for patners were it makes sense to share development costs, example GM and Ford are co-developing 10 spd autos.

So who knows what they are looking to do, but my guess he is looking for patners for hybrid and electric to share development, note he met with Apple and Google people, so wonder what that was about.

Per platforms, I wish they would make cars for 10+ yrs, WK2 and LX's are great examples of how you just improve them every year, toyota and honda do this all the time.

Allpar has a nice story on it

It's more than a rumor. Sergio said that mergers are necessary for the continued growth of the industry. He is, at least openly, the most aggressive CEO in the auto industry when it come to the desire for global expansion.

Jeep is currently supporting the entire FCA corporation. He needs to link up with another money maker to fund the expansion. FCA carries more debt than any major player in the industry. He will either need more money coming in, or will have to start selling or closing some brands. That is not his vision.

I hope Sergio is successful. Through everything I see him as a shot in the arm for the industry. But I might be the only one.

Well brands or going to get closed no matter what. If they merge with another company there will be even more product overlap. I don't think a company like GM brings anything good to the table. Which one of the three truck companies survives -- GMC, Chevy, RAM? Which survives Chevy or Dodge, Buick or Chrysler? The only thing "safe" would be Jeep and Ferrari.

I would rather see a technological pair up with an innovator like Tesla. But Sergio is not a big enough believer in the future of electric to dive into that. Tesla could gain access to all of Chrysler dealerships for SALES in states where they arent allowed to direct sell. FCA would get access to the electrical innovations -- which he will need to have in the future.

Or, a pair up with Tata might make sense since Land Rover has a lot of expertise in common with Jeep, and Jaguar has expertise in creating the perfect sports car that would meld well with the blue collar Dodge offerings, the raw Alfa Romeo offerings.

Re: Development delays hit most Chrysler products

Being somewhat contrary I'd say keep the WK2 platform, dump the Hemi and Diesel (both are expensive to produce) & have three direct injected Pentastars, two with turbo (375 and 425 hp) and one without (300 hp). Two lower rated run on 87 PON.

Can mix and match smaller ones for lighter platforms.

Teammate: Verizon

Where I probable differ the most is in the infotainment systems. Is a big profit item to load on a car but having several cars I just use the car as a BT/AUX input head with amp and speakers. The main system is in my personal cell phone which I clip to the dash when driving.

An interactive 7-8" display driven by the phone and slaved to it would make sense but does not need to be smart.

Really dumb is having to have a subscription data/access/web system for each car.
