In my book, charging MORE than 40% ABOVE MSRP for the Cabin filter, and $55.00 for 2 minutes of labor to install it clearly defines "rip-off".

The $47.92 Hazardous material disposal charge is another blatant rip-off, as is what they charged for the fluid changes.

Re: Did I get ripped off by the service dept?

I'm afraid you did.

The front and rear diff service is not indicated unless you use the vehicle as police, taxi, fleet etc. so that was 100% unnecessary.

And the air filters take an amateur mechanic about 5 minutes of labor tops so the labor there indicates they're pretty shocking price-gougers of the highest order.

Would suggest you read the owners manual AND avoid that dealer permanently - this is just dishonest profiteering dressed up as 'service'. Kind of like going to the dentist who ALWAYS seems to find 5 or 6 small cavities that need to be filled (lots of these charlatans around too sadly...)

Re: Did I get ripped off by the service dept?

It sort of reminds me of some home HVAC work I needed done years ago. I have no clue about air conditioning systems nor do I have the required tools and equipment, so I had no choice but to call someone. The place tried to tell me I needed a new compressor (the big fan outside), and some other stuff for about 2 grand. Luckily I called another place for a second opinion, they had my A/C working for $75...yes 75 bucks!!! All it needed was a refrigerant flush and refill as he found debris in the coils. Has been working perfectly ever since.

Wasn't referring to you. But we'll move on.

I do appreciate all the genuine responses. Seems I need to do a bit more leg work before I just trust a dealer to work on my car. I plan on contacting the dealer and leaving a review on Yelp about my experience. I understand it is partially my fault for going in blind, so to speak, but I feel they bear the brunt of the responsibility for not being honest and trustworthy.

Do I need to take it to a certified Jeep dealersip for the work? Does it void my warranty if some other mechanic (let's say not Jeep certified) works on my vehicle?

I guess the old adage really applies here, "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me." This won't be happening again.

Re: Did I get ripped off by the service dept?

The assistant service manager wanted to change the spark plugs on my MY11 at 30k service. I made him stand in the customer lounge while I went to the maintenance schedule on my tablet. And I'm not very quick on the computer. I was furious, but I still trust the mechanics at the dealer, not the assistant service managers.

But it is a 30k service... Only the 14&up are 100k

Maybe it was my response you were referring to. If that's the case I do apologize. My point was, in a more polite way, I wish more people were informed about the kind of things dealers do and that's why it's frustrating when we see these posts here after the fact. We want to help others here and had we known we could have given you all the information you needed. Such as half the things they did weren't really even needed at 30k, or like I said just how easy it is to change out the engine and cabin filters.
I also understand that some people do not want to mess around doing things themselves, but if we can learn anything here I'm sure you won't fall for that again. I will say the good thing here is I would go to a dealer over some corner mechanic any day. So I would keep doing that, but maybe a different dealership if you can, and know exactly what needs to be done when going in. The manual states clearly what needs to be done and when. There are places that will still say to do oil 3k or 3mo!!!! It's ridiculous.

Re: Did I get ripped off by the service dept?

If you feel like spending the time, ask the service manager to explain each of the charges, especially asking what is the book time for a cabin air filter change and what is the labor rate. Multiply those numbers and see if it matches what they charged you.

If you calmly explain your concerns, maybe they will offer you something. If not a partial refund, then maybe some future free service (if you still want to patronize the place).

Re: Did I get ripped off by the service dept?

Got robbed on the Air filter and labor.

The dealer fluid is roughly $40/qt more if it has the electronic Rear locker

so fluid not so bad. but labor for tcase got robbed it's 2 10MM hex bolts and refill eh and $40 for fluid cost? not sure which Tcase you have but the SRT case uses ATF+4 at $7-9 a qt and takes 2qt.

Either way you got hosed for about $200 more than you should of

According to the manual you weren't due to have the majority of that work done for thousands of miles. I would find an honest dealer even if I had to drive further. Vote with your feet. If enough customers do that they will eventually get the message or go out of business.

I'm sorry you had that experience. It's a bad reflection on everyone in automotive repair that there are scamsters like that out there.

I just received my owner's manual in the mail and most of you probably know you can have one sent to you if your the original owner of the vehicle. (693 pages with index) They also sent me a 414 page user's manual for the Ucoonect 8.4A/8.4AN .(I am a senior citizen and just use the radio, nav, and Uconnect phone mainly-so not going to read that 414 pages.)

I haven't read how often maintenance needs to be performed yet, but it sounds like they did all they could to clean your wallet out plus some!

There are two things that you can do to minimize your costs in the future...read the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual (available online if you can't find it) and consider doing some of the really easy things yourself...such as the cabin air filter (takes two minutes and no tools) and air filter. (similar to the cabin filter but under the hood) Both can be purchased online for half of what the dealer often charges before labor.

Unfortunately, it's a common practice for many vehicle dealers to suggest service intervals for things that are much sooner than required by the manufacturer, if they are required at all. It's not a "Jeep" thing, either. They make money on these services and service departments are a profit center for the business. Being an aware consumer is your best bet to get the required services done when they are due without the inflated bills and unnecessary work/materials. I doubt you'll get taken again and remember, you can always ask in these forums if you're not sure of something...
