Question Did I get ripped off by the service dept?

So I have no idea how much these types of things cost but I was talking to a coworker today about my 30k mile checkup and I mentioned that it cost me about $700 for a few maintenance items. He seemed astounded by the cost. So it got me thinking... Did I get ripped off or did I pay a reasonable amount?

Services performed:
1. Front and rear differential (axle) service:
---parts ($175.55), labor ($154.45)
2. Transfer case (4WD) service:
---parts ($39.80), labor ($110.15)
3. Replace engine air filter:
---parts ($38.95), no charge for labor
4. Replace interior cabin filtration system filter:
---parts ($49.95), labor ($55.05)
5. Hazardous material disposal charge:
---$47.92 (misc charge)

Total:
Parts: $304.25
Labor: $319.65
Misc: $47.92
Tax: $26.42

Grand Total: $698.24

Yes sorry to say you most certainly did get ripped off. The prices are ridiculous not to mention most of that did not even need done at 30k. always go by your owners manual maintenance schedule not what your dealer tells you. If you are an average driver not extreme conditions the only thing needed done at 30k was your air filter and cabin filter probably about $30 bucks and 10 minutes of your time to do them yourself.

for normal driving t case doesnt need changed before 120k, diffs don't have a recommended change and $480 for differentials and trans case you have got to be kidding me. even if you buy the mopar fluids there is less than $100 in fluid and less than a half hour in labor, they are just simple drain and fills. and $48 for hazardous material disposal what the hell is that! $105 to change a cabin filter lol another $10 dollar part and 2 minutes tops of time lol. $55 dollars labor on a cabin filter crazy.

So yeah they got you. Take a read on your owners manual and follow that next time, very little maintenance needed prior to 100k, oil changes, cabin filters and air filters that's about it.

Did I get ripped off by the service dept?

The diff gear oil (if they used mopar one) is crazy expensive so that looks about right. For the other parts the generic versions are more reasonable but again if they used mopar parts again those are crazy expensive and about right.

Labor on the high side ... but ... It always is at the dealer. Filling diffs is easy as they have fill and plug holes. The only problem is skid plates if you have them. The recycling fee looks like a rip off...

Recently did similar maintenance myself with about 28k on odometer. Tcase is not required but again lots of people change the fluid early due to break in. After first change you can go much longer. Diffs especially rear one had to be done - oil looked quite bad. Front diff was barely ok. Since I own the car and plan to keep it I don't mind being aggressive on changing the fluids. The filters if you never did them you probably needed them.

If you would did this DIY and use generic parts/fluids you probably looking around $130. Double that if you used mopar parts (especially fluids).

Re: Did I get ripped off by the service dept?

Whenever you go to a dealer for service, I think the correct question is not "if" you got ripped off but by "how much".

For the engine air filter and cabin air filter, I definitely buy online from whomever Mopar parts sells it cheapest at the time I need it. And depending how much road trip I took that year I sometimes change it as frequently as once a year.

For the fluids, I know I can do it myself but I don't like taking my chances during a warranty claim. So yes, I choose to over pay a dealer with their ridiculous parts and labour charges just to rest easy.

I had an experience with Audi and my extended warranty where it was time to change the transmission fluid which I did from a "VW" specialist as recommended by the Audi forum members and barely a week after my transmission was slipping. I brought it back to my regular Audi dealer and they couldn't figure out why it was doing it. Their suggestion was to re-do the transmission fluid themselves since they cannot vouch what fluid was used and how much they put into it. And if that didn't fix it then to replace the transmission. From then on, I just let a dealer do stuff that they can blame against improper work.

I know they can mess up just like anyone else, but at least I can hold them accountable against the manufacturer (i.e. FCA) if I need to claim warranty.

As for fluid changes, following the manufacturer maintenance is best. But if I were to do a major road trip, I will choose to do some sooner. Better to over do than under IMO. But only you will know how you treat your car and why you want some things done more frequently.

You need to file a police report for the mugging on this one:

4. Replace interior cabin filtration system filter:
---parts ($49.95), labor ($55.05)

Re: Did I get ripped off by the service dept?

Wow, I am astonished by the amount of people who really have no idea and just fall for the dealer BS. I feel bad that someone would pay that much to swap a cabin filter. I hate to say this but do you have any idea on how easy it is? Like as easy as opening your glove box and pulling it out. Yeah, that easy
Also, why is it guys get the service done, THEN post about it? Ask us FIRST!!!!

I know nothing about automotives. Kinda ridiculous that it's just accepted that they rip people off unless the customer knows better.

I have a clinical doctorate and I work in the medical field. Patients come to me for help because I have a greater knowledge base than them. I do not use that fact to take advantage of them for the purpose of financial gain.

What else am I supposed to do? I took it to a certified Jeep dealership for service, not some 3rd party like Jiffy Lube.

You paid the going rate for the dealership. Were you ripped off? No, if they completed the work. Did you overpaid? Yes, since you could have done it yourself.

The Mopar fluid price is correct, at least to the general public. I'm sure the dealer themselves get it for much cheaper though.

I just did mine, myself a few weeks ago. The diff and transfer case oil ran me almost $180 at the dealer.

Ordered the filters online. IIRC, the engine filter was like $30. I think cabin was $25.

Oh, I did spent $40 for some new ramps to do the front diff since I couldn't fit underneath. And $15 for 2 fluid pumps.

WeJGCNow...totally hear ya...my wife is in anesthesia and when I met her she was in the middle of a major home termite repair ($40k+) and as a home remodeler, realtor and investor I puked when I learned the details...but trust me u want her handling your anesthesia.

We all know what we have experienced and hopefully get treated proper in the areas we don't know but not always, especially in the car world...caveat emptor definitely rules here.

You only got "tuned up" for a couple Benjamin's and u at least got actual product and service for it so no real big.

If this dealer is your best option and you are bothered by this maybe a stop by to chat with the srvc mgr to discuss your concerns might help the next visit...."I am not a car guy and probably never will be but I need to know I can trust my servicing dealer, can we talk about my last visit?" kinda chat....

BTW, welcome and kudos for being brave enough to ask car guys that kind of question. 😃

Wasn't expecting the condescending response that I got earlier, so I appreciate your helpful/thoughtful response. I guess I'll call around town and compare prices for the services performed so I can find a better dealership next time.

Re: Did I get ripped off by the service dept?

Your Jeep comes with a Users Manual which is next to useless. You can down load a genuine Owners Manual here (683 pages): http://www.jeep.com/download/pdf/man...kee-OM-2nd.pdf

Read it at least twice and refer to it before every trip to the dealership. Forewarned is forearmed.

According to the manual you weren't due to have the majority of that work done for thousands of miles. I would find an honest dealer even if I had to drive further. Vote with your feet. If enough customers do that they will eventually get the message or go out of business.

I'm sorry you had that experience. It's a bad reflection on everyone in automotive repair that there are scamsters like that out there.

HOLY CRAP!!!!! You need to do a little due diligence before you get service. And you need to find a new dealer who isn't a thief. That is just a sad experience.
