Diesel overland burning smell at idle during test drive

I test drove a diesel Overland under consideration as well. Fast and amazing torque. Except when idling during the test drive the dealer said the strong engine burning smell we were breathing in suddenly was due to cozmolene which protects the underbody from rust. We weren't totally buying this and read in forums that it's an issue perhaps with the def fluid or new engine burning in that Jeep is supposedly aware of and working on. Have you heard about this and any opinions on what we experienced would be greatly appreciated.

How many miles/kilometers were on the test vehicle?

Re: Diesel overland burning smell at idle during test drive

I too smelled a burn type smell when I test drove an Overland diesel, I just figured it was possibly due to be a new vehicle and something in the engine bay off gassing, like the exhaust manifold or something. Actually make that 2 diff. JGC diesels I test drove and both had the same burning smell.

With only 40 miles on the odometer, it's "unlikely" it was in in regen mode. Speculation would point to the burning in of the exhuast/hot brakes/new car hot engine smell. I would not be alarmed by it, unless it was present at 200 miles.

Thanks for the feedback did you decide to purchase the Overland despite this concern and if so did the burning smell dissipate with time?

Re: Diesel overland burning smell at idle during test drive

Can't comment specifically about the new diesel engine in the Jeep, but several of the vehicles I've bought brand new over the years have weird smoke-like smells to varying degrees. They've all subsided after a few months of ownership.

Thanks for the vote of optimism, this was a concern for us with the cozmolene verdict the dealer driving with us tried to convince us was the cause of the smell. It definitely came across to us as more of a diesel related engine burn kicking in while idling at the curb after driving it several miles off the highway.

Yep pretty normal for this in vehicles in Australia regardless of make

Takes a little while for the protective coating to burn away from exhaust areas

A common thing that burns off on most new cars is plastic decals on the exhaust system.

My '14 diesel smelled like that for a little while. Basically until I got it hot a few times.

Re: Diesel overland burning smell at idle during test drive

Me too, my 2014 CRD stunk out the garage for the first week, but since then the smell is gone. I think it is just new plastics off gassing and coatings burning off.
