Diesel - V6 Gas?

I am about to pull-the-plug on a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with the off-road adventure II package. All is worked out but I vacillate between the V6 Gas and the eco-diesel. Inherently I like the diesel because of the heavier duty transmission, towing (I have a waterski boat at 4000#) and I just like the feel of the extra torque. The negatives are the price but mostly my concern is all the problems that I have read about the 2014 Diesel. I would like to hear from the 2015 GC eco-diesel owners: happy with your choice, problem-free? Convince me! Thanks

Re: Diesel - V6 Gas?

I'm picking up a 2015 diesel shortly and spent several months going between the engine options. 2015 model has the updated cat converter part - which the old part seemed to be the major issue with 2014s. If I was looking to tow 4000+ I'd be looking at the v8 or diesel and not the v6 even though it is rated for it. The diesel will also burn less fuel than the v8 while towing as it doesn't impact mpg as much under load.

I really like the low rpm power of the diesel. To me it felt more enjoyable to drive than the other two in my day to day driving.

Whatever option you get consider a Chrysler extended warranty. Some threads on here with good deals through online retailers.

Keep in mind if you are ordering a diesel from factory it could be a while based on other's experience on here. Might be best to get one off lot if you want it right away or have them give you a firm eta on delivery. Some on here have been waiting since mid January.

Thanks for the advise. I will order the jeep deisel but would like to wait for the HK audio option for the overland, assuming it is posted shortly.

Congrats. Got mine this week. Audio system is good so far - find it sounds better when BT streaming vs radio etc. I don't think I would've paid the extra 2k for the option.

Liking the diesel so far and the low end power and such a nice ride. Just watch for messy diesel pumps...my first fill up didn't go so well - nozzle had some diesel in it and when I put it in the filled next some leaked down the side of the Jeep Will be much more selective next pump I choose to fill at.

Re: Diesel - V6 Gas?

2015 here - nothing but great things about my EcoDiesel! Love the pulling power and mileage - I easily get 30+ on the interstate, and 25+ around the city, driving it like I stole it. Downside is obviously the cost, but when you're looking at an Overland, it's a small percentage of the price

That is a big turn off for me with diesel. Diesel pumps are often a mess.
fuel on the ground that never evaporates, fuel on pump handles etc.

I have a diesel tractor and dread getting fuel for it.

Re: Diesel - V6 Gas?

I was considering the Eco Diesel and the HEMI for my new Grand Cherokee I just purchased. I don't think I ever wanted to like an engine more than I did the Eco Diesel. But I just couldn't bring myself to it. Just too high of a maintenance cost, coupled with expensive, hard to find oil and filters, and several other reasons turned me off to it.

Also, I found in my area, about the only 2014 models left over on dealers lots were Eco Diesel models. And there were a lot of them. Another thing was when I researched extended warranties, none were available that went the time and mileage of the gas models. That really turned me off, because longevity is one of the main reasons for going diesel in the first place. And ALL of the extended warranties for the Eco Diesel models were much more expensive, and had a longer laundry list of things they didn't cover. I would have felt much more vulnerable, repair wise.

I think the mistake they made with the Grand Cherokee diesel models, was not going with a well proven diesel like the Cummins. People just don't seem to have the confidence in this new Fiat model diesel.

I could have picked up a better equipped 2014 Eco Diesel G.C. for substantially less than I paid for my 2015 HEMI Limited Model. I still went with the HEMI, and I'm glad I did. Don't get me wrong, I wish nothing but the best for Eco Diesel owners. I just wasn't impressed enough to take the plunge.

Re: Diesel - V6 Gas?

Love my Ecodiesel. Great drivetrain. If I had to do it all over again I'd get the same thing. 13,500 trouble free (haven't been to dealer for anything since purchase, changed oil twice myself) miles.

Re: Diesel - V6 Gas?

Diesel is great I drove 30k miles last year, it worked out to a cost saving. The diesel maintenance cost is higher. If I drove half of that mileage I would go with V6 and upgraded to overland or summit, to offset the cost.

Ziegler has good deal on extended warranty, can buy online.

Re: Diesel - V6 Gas?

Not one drivetrain or emissions issue on my 2014 EcoDiesel after nine months and 13k miles. With summer diesel it'll return 30-31MPG cruising at 68mph. The new catalyst revision seems to have fixed those issues and a new skid plate for the DEF wiring and plumbing has improved that situation.

The EVIC has me changing my oil at about 9500 mile intervals. Oil is currently $7.42/qt shipped on Amazon and the Mopar filter can be had for under $30 with decent aftermarket options in the works.

DEF seems to last about the length of the oil change, but I buy it at the pump at the truck stop about five gallons at a time to keep it fresh.

The Ziegler 8y/120k cost $1950 after discounts from Bob.
