Differentials

Anyone find that their diffs were under filled from the factory.

My under standing is the front diff should hold 1.2 qts or about 38 ounces.

I drained mine and only 23 ounces came out? I refilled it and got a tad over a qt before it ran out of the fill hole.

The rear diff holds 1.4 qts or about 45 ounces. I drained mine and got
38 ounces. I am going to refill it this after noon.

Note I am glad I drained the, lots of sparkle in the fluid.

I am refilling with Redline GL5 75w-90, has the friction modifier in it, need it for the rear since I have QD2

Re: Differentials

Just refilled the rear diff, took about 45 ounces, filled it until fluid came out the fill hole.

Oh when working on the Rear with QD2, there is a plug on the back if your facing the engine, it warns you don't remove. THe fill plug is on the pass side of the diff just above the exhaust pipe.

Re: Differentials

The "sparkle" you mention, is it from the rear ELSD? If so, it's from the clutch packs. Nothing to worry about.
You mention the plug on the rear of the diff. Not sure what the change was in the models but my drain is on the back side.

I will snap a picture.

The 'sparkle' is the wear metals, I am amazed at how much pearl was in the oil.

Re: Differentials

Just did my diffs too. Really needed it. Used Amsoil on both. Rear was about 1.4 quarts and front was just under a quart, filled until started dripping out. Quick DIY since both are not solid axles.
Rides so much smoother.

Here is a couple of pics of the rear diff 2015 with QD2.

First is looking toward the front, the plug I mentioned in earlier post on the back of the diff, in center of picture thru the stamping in the cross member, cant see the writing on the plug but it says do not remove. You can see the drain plug at 5 oclock.

The second picture is under the rear diff looking at its side toward the driver side, the fill plug is at 2 oclock above the exhaust pipe

I have changed the diffs and t-case twice, the first at 200 miles and dumped them again yesterday at 1600 miles, I am amazed at the amount of wear metals in fluids I dumped out, oils were full of sparkle, like what you find in the first changes on small engines.

On Bitog someone did some oil analysis on his Tacomas diffs and t-case at 1000 miles, was full of silicone and all kinds of debris. Confirms it is wise to change the fluids a few time early to get the junk out.

I will probably change them again at 5K miles and hopefully they will look cleaner and I can then go to normal 50K drains. I used Redline 75w-90 in the diffs and AMsoil Universal ATF in the T-case. Also changed the oil.

Do you know when Chrysler suggest you change those fluids?

They probably tell you not to change them on Service A and on Severe Service B probably 50K.

But gear oil is cheap, the older Danas in my WJ and Durango, was every 12k for severe service.
