I was not speaking for every dealer. I guess I need to be more specific in the future. Our dealers have a master key. It was a surprise to me when I told them where the key was in the car and they told me they don't need it as they have a master.

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

Re: Dishonest Dealership Practices?

I did a little Googling. There is no "Master Key", but there are "Master Key Sets" that I guess some dealers buy and some don't. The Toyota set has 11 keys.

I wonder if that means there are only 11 different patterns for all Toyotas?

Re: Dishonest Dealership Practices?

McGard has usually been the manufacturer of all the locking lug nuts for my past vehicles...including my Jeep, so I would question the concept of a "Master Key" if the locks were made by them.

Take a look at the paper work that came with them regarding purchasing additional locks or keys...

Don't question ... look for answers.

From the McGard website;

"Dealerships
McGard's computerized dealer registration program provides easy access to information and prompt service for your customer's car. Our Master Key Set program allows dealerships to service a vehicle when the customer's key is not available."

That goes to show how, I'm not sure what the right word is here, lazy, incompetent, ignorant the service departments are that I've dealt with regarding the locks on my wheels. Like I said before, I was told by one dealership they'd have to cut the locks off....I immediately hung up....master keys are readily available, why don't these huge dealerships have them. Seems like a necessary tool of the trade.

Good boy Bill, you get a gold star for looking that information up.

I for one couldn't give a rat's a$$ to look that up since I always keep the wheel lock key in my vehicle, and whatever dealership I take my vehicle to always seems to ask for the key anyway.

My guess (that's if it's OK with Bill) is some dealerships don't what to pay for the Master key program.

Re: Dishonest Dealership Practices?

When the dealer signs-up with McGard, the master key set program is included.
