I do agree with Milous for the most part. I think the shady dealers far outweigh the good ones. It is important to be prepared for what comes at you but for most of the population there is a few dealer options. The only way to punish the dealers that play these games is to leave, not buy from there and let others know.

I consult for a few different places. There are many I would never buy from.

My first experience was bizarre and cost the dealer an almost certain sale. I walked into a Subaru dealer knowing exactly what I was going to buy and pay cash. I sat down with the dealer to discuss price, I said 'what is the best deal that you can offer, skip the too and fro'. Old matey replies, 'I can't give you that otherwise you will go shop around'. I said, 'well I've worked hard for my money and I'd be stupid not too'. The dealer replied 'they will just beat us by 1-2 hundred dollars and we will lose the sale'. I replied 'if they only beat you by a couple of hundred dollars then its not worth my while to travel to the other dealerships or buy from them. Besides, it's my money and I would like a price to compare to make sure I get a good deal.' The dealer replied, 'it's our car so I'm not giving you a price'. I just laughed at him and said, 'so you won't sell me a car?'
I went back out to check the car out, silly enough he was still happy to show me the car so I made him show me every feature from the spare to the radio system. I departed and said, 'I'm 23 years old and will never buy a car from your dealership for as long as I live'. Never been back and bad mouthed the dealer to anyone who mentioned them. LOL

Yes, generally I do hate the car buying experience. Every now and then you find a dealer who is good to work with but that seems to be few and far between. Not trying to say all dealers are bad.....just that I have had more negative experiences than positive ones.

I'm in the process of dealing with my credit card company with regards to a charge the dealer hit me for 6 weeks after I closed the deal and took delivery because they messed up the books. So they claim, they never charged the $500.00 deposit when I bought the car, I reminded them that was there fault not mine and they had no right to charge my credit card without my authorization. As far as I am concerned and I relayed this message to them, the deal was closed and finalized when I took delivery (6 weeks ago). I refuse to let this go through since I have little respect for dealers in general.

The sales experience at my local dealer was about as stress free as it gets! I live in a small town, I know the sales manager very well so here's how it went....

Me: I like the White CG Limited, how much will you give for my trade
Him: Do you want to drive it while I look at your car....I leave in the Jeep show it to the wife

Me: Any incentives or rebates on it
Him: Man it's a 14 so not much out there but were giving you XXXX for your car
Me: throw in the extended warranty
Him: Sorry man I can't so that
Me: Add 1500 to my trade
Him: I'll add 1200
Me: I'll take it, how much for the extended max care warranty if I don't finance it
Him: $1050
Me: I'll take it

We shot the bull while the papers printed and everyone was happy. I'm 99% sure I could have drove an hour away to a larger lot and save a little but there's no way it would have been this easy.

I found the warranty thing weird but I left happy so I didn't really worry about it.

That is great, and you know what, likely if you ever have an issue, they will take care of you.

Stress and gas and time isn't worth half a percent in savings.

My best friend owns a CDJ dealership. The buying experience is amazing. I have lost count of how many vehicles I have bought from him. I always give him a gentle reminder to not give me too much of a discount.

My other vehicle is a BMW. I went to a local dealer and was offered what I felt was a very low discount on a specific car. I then wen to another dealer and got triple the discount on the exact same car. When I mean the same car, I mean the same VIN.

Re: Do you HATE HATE HATE the car buying experience (bad dealerships)? Read this...

Dan... it took me 2 months to find a dealership i wanted to buy from. 2 locals (golling and Zott) were to put it bluntly "Dicks" i had rude salesmen and i had zero desire to even talk to them again after 5 minutes on the phone. A third dealer and actually the first one i called was Orchard chrysler/jeep in romeo michigan. the salesman was great, except they would not take 1 single penny off sticker, and their sticker was higher than anywhere else honestly.. And that cost them the sale, and that same jeep i was going to buy is still sitting in their lot

So i almost gave up and bought a 4runner, but called Moran Chrysler in st. clair mi (which is about a hour from me), the salesman was awesome. we had a nice chat and he explains pricing and stuff to me and also was just over 2k lower than anyone else was willing to do. Also.. we spoke around 3pm, and at 10am the next morning the jeep was here and the deal was done. I couldn't be happier with that experience.

BTW.. one of my customers was just in asking me about the jeep when he saw it.. he said he wants one but the dealers all act like they don't want to sell a car. He had the same problems buying that i had. Where with GM dealers i have never had a bad time and was always treated right..

P.S. the Salesman at St. clair was Sam Catanzaro if anyone is in that area..

P.P.S. i owned a 67 and a 68 rebel... i LOVED those cars.. wish i had them still

I swear i never had such an uncomfortable experience, especially with them pressuring me to buy right now. I will NEVER return to that dealership again, i even called the GM and complained.
If i go to a dealership now and more than one person approaches me, i just turn around and leave.
GC, this sounds like my call to zott.. "Hi, i am interested in a jeep on your lot, stock #xxxxx, just wanted to know what kind of price we could work out on that"

Salesman: "Price is on the web page, do you want me to write it up?" yeah.. great place....

OMFG... you know I sold cars like 20 years ago and I needed to get out!

I know there are still some good dealers out there, maybe harder to find but sometimes the more rural ones are better.

Thant is so sad, they could have taken 5 minutes of thier time and sold another car....SAD
