Likely keeping msrp down.

FWIW, my '02 Limited with BOTH front and rear ELSD (the original Quadra-Drive) would simply walk away from my current rear only ELSD...i relished slippery conditions, it had insane traction and was plain fun in the snow...current gen, meh, gets the job done.
At the sales point, I did not ask the right questions. I would have preferred a rear ELSD, and would have been willing to wait for the dealer to get one. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20 as they say. I am happy enough with my QT-II, it does okay. I will look for steep uphills to see where it fails, I will want to test that.

Your '02 with ELSD front and rear sounds awesome. I'll have to look at that for my next rig, but that won't be (or shouldn't be) until 10-15 years down the road. And 300,000 on my CRD! Fingers crossed.

I suspect the differences are best highlighted during starts and initial slippage engagement. QT will have you feeling less confident during initial engagement as it will be a tad behind the situation and less graceful as it adapts to changing traction. The QD snaps to work nearly instantly and seems to be right on the dynamic traction situation, thus, inspiring confidence. The other scenario to highlight them is during sketchy and highly variable traction conditions like you have to nail the gas for the torque to propel the vehicle forward but that can blow thru the BTC action for QT when you are only trying to grunt the truck up a few feet, the QD actually locks so it can take the swings more immediately and accurately, again, inspiring confidence.

QT is a great no-major frills 4WD setup with all the transfer cases and 4WD features. Don't think the dual ELSD's are coming back just because of cost but would love to be wrong. I previously mentioned the importance of tires, duh, but we as drivers are probably the weakest link especially if we don't understand the 4WD system we just paid extra money for, ya know...the manual is a start but messing around is the only way to "get it"...anyway, talked too much already, enjoy your JGC, you have a nice one that I am sure will make you very happy for a long time. I also keep mine til dead. Haven't made it past 197k on one yet...

Yes its fully possible. One of my friends did a QD2 swap on his Laredo 3.7 (wk) and wired the two diff's to a switch to fully lock them. Otherwise they operate just as the stock diff's do, open in operation. He kept the NV146 transfer as well from the Laredo.

So he has the QT1 transfer but has QD2 axles. Only thing he did to the computers was recalibrate the TCM for the 3.73 gears

QFT. My driveway has a slight grade and happens to be covered in glare ice at the moment.

I can feel QD engage nearly immediately after slippage starts and suddenly the vehicle can make slow, steady progress while remaining in control. "Confidence" is a good term.

Well it turns out that I do have QD-2! I just checked the sticker and it's on there, a $795 option.

Yes!

Not really something very practical to try...but you can include it on the next one you buy!

QD2 is an option on V8/Diesel 4x4 Overland and is Standard on V8/Diesel 4x4 Summit. QD2 is not available on any V6. So overall its on a fairly low percentage of Grand Cherokees.

Re: Does the Grand Cherokee have an electronic locking diff??

I've hit the trails 5x since having the DuraTracs installed, and they've been a little muddy, in addition to being rocky. Man, that ELSD kicks in nicely at the rear on the steep uphills, now that I know it's back there!
