Does the Grand Cherokee have an electronic locking diff??

I read that the Cherokee Trailhawk has an electronic locking diff, and wondering if the GC also has this.

Sorry for the stupid question, but how does this differ from a mechanical locking diff, like on the Wrangler?

Also, the GC has a limited slip diff. Isn't it either/or? Can they have both??

Thanks!!

Quadra-drive II system includes Electronic Rear Limited-Slip Differential. It is 795$ option on Grand Cherokee. But, this option is available only Overland or above trims.

As far as I understand it, the "electronic limited slip differential" on QuadraDrive II can be thought of as an "electronically-controlled variable differential", insofar that it can be set to fully locked or fully open (like a typical locking differential), or in-between (to allow limited slip). That's obviously quite versatile.

There's no "diff lock" console button on the Jeep like many other vehicles have: the ELSD is computer controlled, though I believe 4LO will lock it.

As justice pointed out, only JGCs with QuadraDrive II will have an ELSD. QuadraTrac II uses selective braking and open differentials instead.

QD2 is also available on the Limited with the Diesel or V8 as part of the ORA2 package. It's not available with the V6 on any configuration.

You'd have to change out more than the differential...lots of other hardware including the axils as well as the computer side of things. Gone are the days of simple mechanical substitutions when everything is computer controlled.

Nope, at least not without a lot of other stuff.

The way the QD2 rear diff (and the QD2 front diff as well on WKs) works is:
- there is a gerotor pump which is driven by the difference between the two axles.
- the pressure from the pump applies the locking clutch
- there is a solenoid valve which releases the pressure from the pump.

I suppose you could put a switch on the dash to control the solenoid valve, but I don't know how well that would work out.. normally the drivetrain control handles that.

Well, what about a mechanical differential - a Torsen ? I do not think on paper such a differential would interfere with the software BLD solution currently in use.

There is a suggestion these guys are working on a selectable rear diff lock for WK2s.....

Do they still use the Eaton unit in the WK2?

I lied. This is the way the WK ELSD works, but the WK2 ELSD has a motor that drives some clutches.. with ten wires connecting it to the ELSD control module..

So that would be quite a pain to make work if not originally equipped..

Re: Does the Grand Cherokee have an electronic locking diff??

I have QT2 on mine. I wonder what limitations QT2 has that QD2 can handle? So far with what I've done, and some obstacles were pretty gnarly, QT2 has done well enough. Put another way, what can QD2 do that QT2 can't?
