Driving away without the key?

Is this possible? If I started the Jeep and then placed the keys on my garage shelf, could I drive off? If so, for how long? Once it's shut off then it can't be started without the key again.

I see this as a 2 way situation:

1.) God forbid you ever get carjacked, just keep the keys in your pocket and let them take it. Short lived car jacking?

2.) I accidentally leave my keys behind, shut off the car at my destination, then realize I have no key! Now no way to start back up.

Anyone test this out. Preferably number 2 above?

Re: Driving away without the key?

There were a coupe of threads quite a while back. The conclusion IIRC was that you could drive it until you run out of gas. But there should be some kind of alert when the car is running and the fob is not in the Jeep.

Re: Driving away without the key?

There is a warning message... "key fob has left the vehicle."

Still doesn't prevent you from driving off without it.

Re: Driving away without the key?

Also an annoying chime that drives my wife bonkers if I get out of the car when it's running and the key is in my pocket.

Re: Driving away without the key?

Vehicle will run without the fob until it runs out of gas or the ignition button is pushed. If it had been designed to shut down when driving off without the fob, it would be a liability issue that could cause an accident and Chrysler would join GM on the nightly news for safety issues.

Re: Driving away without the key?

If your wife also had a key fob, the chime won't go off when your fob leaves the vehicle while the engine is running.

That's hilarious! This has happened to me on several occasions and it does make the wife crazy.

Why would she have a key fob for my vehicle?

Re: Driving away without the key?

I have driven somewhere (with the key in my pocket) and have the wife drop me off to go run her errands. Luckily she realized it just before she turned off the car. She would have been left with a immovable brick.

If you have an active Uconnect Access subscription couldn't you use the app to start the car as needed regardless of whether you have the fob with you?

Yeah but if yours works like mine does you might have to wait 5 minutes for the doors to unlock the another 5 for the jeep to start.
