Personally I'd never choose the 4 Runner over the Jeep. I think for a 2 row vehicle, the WK2 is a better all around vehicle. Reliability would be better, but I agree the 4Runner is a little over styled, especially the refresh in less than Limited trim.

Toyota has 8 speed gearboxes, just right now they're in the Lexus lineup. The LS has had an 8 speed since 2007, the GS and IS got it this year. Personally I'm okay with the 6 as long as the shift logic makes sense.

The 8 sipped was a huge upgrade from the 5 in the WK2, but the 6 in the highlander seemed sufficient.

Aside from the Lexus LS, I would say the WK2 is probably the best highway car I've had. It really does ride great, smooth and refined. If they had a 3 row one and fixed the little reliability issues, it'd be perfect I agree.
Best highway car currently is the Jag XJ supercharged. Nicer ride than a 750 or 760 and handles better than the S class. LS is in the minor leagues compared to these 3. LS is way to isolated for me and I dont like the handling. A8 is somewhere between the S class and the LS. I would still take a Alpina or 750 in the twisties but for interstate trips the Jag is my favorite. On advantage to the S type is the steel/armor plate between the trunk and seats which will defeat shrapnel and some handgun and rifle rounds.

Its your car payment and money drive what your wifey wants cause if you dont you never hear the end of it. Then go buy a Caterham Super 7 to piss her off.

Re: Drove a 2014 Toyota Highlander today, my thoughts vs the WK2

I have owned a Land Cruiser and it was an excellent vehicle except when the transmission failed at 84K miles. Also it drank gas. However it rode well, had great turn in and had a very off road capable system.
I also liked my brothers Highlander which I borrowed a few times and it got excellent fuel mileage. There is no doubt that they make a terrific vehicle however I wanted the diesel plain and simple otherwise I would have purchased another Outback or a Highlander...

BTW, unless they have changed things a lot, those back two seats in the Highlander are only suitable for very young kids. You don't want to have to put an adult or even a tween/teen back there!

The 2014 is all new, just came out. Worlds better than your 07 or the redesign you speak of. Niether of those Highlanders I would have considered, but the new one is much better.

The difference IMHO is not all that much different then that between the WK and WK2.

The new one is much better. Second row has significantly more room than the Jeep, and I can sit in reasonable comfort in the third row as a 6" tall man. The best third row is IMHO the Pathfinder/Infiniti QX60...

They just have to release it!

Even without the air suspension it rides great at highway speeds.

What's wrong with this? Looks like a stretched GC, same basic suv only with an extra row ofseats in the back

The Durango just doesn't appeal to me. I've tried, but I don't like the interior, and without the whole Jeep look, feel thing it just doesn't work for me.

Re: Drove a 2014 Toyota Highlander today, my thoughts vs the WK2

As a 2014 GC owner who came from a 2010 Highlander I have a few thoughts -

My old 2010 Highlander rode decent, had good interior room and plenty of storage space, and was very good in snow/ice/mud. On the downside the acceleration seemed to lack at times, the gas mileage wasn't as good as I hoped, the interior had hard plastic everywhere which scratched easily and trim pieces seemed cheap (seriously no lights for door lock/windows switches?), 3rd row was only suited for small children, basic electronic systems and not much insulation from road noise or hard rain. My old highlander was reliable but did have some issues with the radio, drivers side window, thump from window cowl, and I found out the hard way a hiccup with the air/fuel system sensors reporting a check engine light shut off my AWD until the dealership could reset the code.

Now for the 2014 Highlander it appears Toyota along with a new style gave more space for the 3rd row, updated the electronics, upgraded the interior finish, added more insulation to have a quieter ride and updated the suspension for a better ride on road.

The one change for the 2014 I feel may not be an upgrade for the 2014 Highlander (which I believe is still based off the Camry Chassis) is ditching the full time AWD 50/50 split system the previous highlander had to an on demand system that is front wheel drive unless accelerating or slippage is noticed by the computer then power can be sent to the rear wheels, and there is a lock button that will allow 50/50 split up to 25mph (if what I read is correct). Now having driven a few Rav4s with a similar setup I never found it anywhere near as good as the GC or 2010 Highlander systems, seemed the computer was always a bit too late in severe ice/snow conditions but maybe the system has been tweaked for 2014 and responds better than the ones Toyota put in the RAV4s I drove.

I feel the 2014 Jeep is a more robust vehicle for towing, off-roading, and overall utility but the 2014 Highlander wins in space, people hauling and possibly on road ride. Both are very good vehicles just I feel aimed at different customers.

Good luck in your search to bad the Durgano is not your cup of tea since it has the more interior room with a 3rd row which it sounds like you are looking for.

Agree, almost looks like a Highlander
