I've been adding to FlyFinaticLou's thread for off-roading proof pictures of those of us who stray from the mall parking lots, but I don't want to over-contribute to it, and I also wanted to create a record of some of my off-road fun.

Before washing the mud off today (from the other day hitting the trails with my daughter - in FFL's thread) this guy walks up to me at a gas station and says he does car masks (or wraps), and he said he really likes the mud pattern on mine. He called it art and said he oughtta create a mask like my mud. So before washing it off I took these pictures because I agree that the mud pattern was artful. My wife calls them character markings.

The mud has been washed off now but here is what it looked like a couple of hours ago. iPhone pictures diminish the muddiness on the car, it looked muddier than these pictures show (and I have to get a DSLR!).

My JGC CRD is stock. These WK2s are quite capable off road. Hopefully this encourages others to explore the trails.

I compiled some pictures, videos, and most of (all of?) my previous posts of getting some dirt or mud or sand.

You've got some good media there. I like the last one in the mud. Did you make it through ?
Thanks! Are you talking about me being pulled out? In this picture?
Land vehicle Vehicle Car Off-roading Automotive tire

After being pulled out, I'd had enough for the day and headed home. I probably could have continued up the trail, but that route was the only way in or out and I would have had to come down through there again. I thought enough was enough. When I returned with my daughter the other day we stopped at that same spot to walk around and look. It was a lot dryer and trivially easy to walk on, unlike when it was muddy when it was very slippery.

Hi echo7tango, and no, you should not feel as though you've "over -contributed" ! Not even sure I understand that thought, but know that I feel you've been one of many "bright spots" on "my" humble tread! That it's lasted this long is kinda nice, and if it goes on for a few more years, I hope I can do the same. I am "trying" my best to get on the off-road in early May. Not sure now which direction - all depends on where I decide to "furnish" my "Reconizer" (my '16 75th trail rated in Recon Green). Mesa, Arizona may be the way I go (for one the weather will comfort these weary bones) - Sierra Expeditions has just about all the items I want and the ability to install it ! From there it will be off to SW Colorado as directly as possible. Scenic for sure; any advice ?
The rest of the trip is not fully routed yet . . . But I will provide lots of Camping best I can to include shots of the Jeep by the Rivers & lakes I plan to fly fish. After all that was/is the original intent - perhaps i can re-inspire a few to follow . . . ?
Well Echo7Tango, please feel free to contribute any time to "my" thread too & best to yours.
I'm fortunate to have the trails at Hollister Hills only an hour from my house, and I try to go once every month or two. Well, I did not want to keep posting things like, Hi from muddy Hollister Hills, and then a few weeks later another Hello again from the mud at Hollister Hills, and again and again in that thread. That could get monotonous and I thought my not over-contributing could encourage others to share their trail times. And, I will add to it from time to time, certainly. Good thread idea!

From Mesa AZ to SW Colorado, you say? Here are three ideas:

If it interests you, you can drive out on the dirt trails to the Shiprock rock formation, at Shiprock NM. I think you can drive around the Shiprock too. Maybe, possibly, you can camp beside it. Shiprock is quite stately. I spent a little time out there last year, and found trails that got me close to it. On Google Maps, I'm pretty sure I took Indian Service Rte 5010 to get to it. Take that north from Indian Service Rte 13, SW of town. (Map: https://goo.gl/XF8hwS)

I've also heard good things about Canyon de Chelly. Although I've driven (and ridden) through Chinle AZ, I've never been to Canyon de Chelly. I hear it's worth it.

The Million Dollar Highway between Silverton CO and Ouray CO has some dramatic views.

And I love your recon green!

Echo7Tango - Thanks, I'll be doing THAT research a bit later but I have already jotted down the info. for reference. Your "history" suggests you do more than beat up on your Jeep at Hollister . . . maybe you could venture off to those other places on an upcoming vacation or long weekend? Camp out in the Jeep or a nice OZ-Tent (ground ) or . . . ?
It really is a wonderful way to "unwind" - no scheduling, no itinerary, just do what ever the weather dictates while at your favorite location. Of course I am Retired (Navy) and have no "job worries," but other things have grabbed my attention now & then, so I (unfortunately) am not totally "free" ! With age comes experience and with that knowledge and hopefully wisdom to share! It's the Sharing part thats difficult, when the "listeners" are "young-uns" who seem to have a short attention span or too "busy" exhausting their thumbs ! ps; some of my dry humor, not intended to imply or offend in any way. Again Echo, thanks and happy trails to you and everyone on the trail !

Back on the trails at Hollister Hills, at another good clinic held by our local club, Esprit de Four. A good day!

.
No idea why upside down and sideways! When I posted these to FB just now, they're right side up...

Okay, then it's about 90 minutes south of you. If I did this map correctly (link below), it should zoom in directly on the roof of the entrance gate, with directions from SMto. I believe it's $5 for a day use pass, and $50 for an annual pass that's good at all California SVRA parks (including Pismo Beach, and Hungry Valley off of I-5 at the top of the Grapevine). What a deal, truly. You get a map of the trails, and the trails are rated easy, medium and hard, so it's a fairly well controlled environment where it's easy to explore on your own -- it's also easy on your own because the rangers patrol it daily.

I encourage all JGC owners to get a little comfortable with what our rigs are capable of. I don't know about anyone else but this rig is my daily driver, it is expensive, and I cannot afford to break it. I try to tread lightly.

And I am pretty sure I could drive my wife's VW Jetta on all of the easy trails at HH.

If you do go, have fun and let us know how it goes!

Here we are back in the dunes of Pismo Beach. We camped for the night on a weekend drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles, on a Friday night after work. And then on Saturday morning we continued down to L.A.

We could have done the entire drive to L.A. on Friday night, but we wanted to sleep in the dunes.

It is very comfortable sleeping in the JGC. I bought some foam cutouts to make our bed. Very comfortable.

I thought long and hard about if I wanted an RTT or not. In the end I decided to go with the foam cutouts and sleep inside. My wife enjoys it, so I’m glad. And I don’t have to drive around with a big and bulky RTT up on the roof.

Having spent 13 years in the Marine Corps I’ve had my fill of sleeping on the ground. These days I’ll avoid that at all costs.

@echo7tango ; Those pillows look very inviting. My wife is a seamstress and she has several bolts of that same fabric 👍

A little while back there was a meteor shower. We drove up to southern Oregon, to the Pillars of Rome, and camped out for it. We slept inside the JGC, but at 0200hrs we woke up, went outside, and lay down on the cot to enjoy the starry night sky and some shooting stars.
224705

We were MILES from anyone else. The silence was great. I shot these with a tripod and timer.

224706

The same bedsheets, @Patrick-A51. The pattern is like camouflage, it hides the dirt.

224707

In this time lapse photo, you can barely make out my JGC in the lower left. It was very dark that night, the better to see the stars!

224708

An attempted photo looking up at the starry sky. Not a great shot, by any means. The stars were great!

The next morning, some of the Rome Pillars. This is near Rome, OR.

We did not see another soul for many hours. It was great.

Sounds like you two had a good time. The storage container on the roof of your Jeep what brand is it?

On the 4th of July my wife and I met some friends and we hit the trails at our local Hollister Hills off-road park. One guy brought his Unimog, two had Jeep Wranglers, one had a 4Runner, one an FJ Cruiser, and I had my white Grand Cherokee. I especially had fun on this one particular trail.

Yes it was fun. Although I’d say that the Esprit de Four group’s Safety Clinic (held 2x annually at Hollister) is a better value and more educational. The Jeep Adventure Academy didn’t teach as much and was more focused on brand positioning and brand recognition. Don’t get me wrong, I love Jeep and I love my Jeep, but that’s how the two compare. That’s my .02.

I’m preparing to go to Moab and Monument Valley in October so I went to Hollister Hills yesterday to practice on the trails. It’s great having that place a little over an hour away. And on a weekday there’s hardly anyone there!

My GC is mainly stock.

This obstacle is called Frame Twister. My very first time on it was in 2014 at an Esprit de Four Safety Clinic, with one of their spotters. He showed me the way through, and once you know, you know.

I tackled this black diamond run a few times before, in both directions. But yesterday I couldn’t make it through… Near the end of it at the top the tire ruts were too big and deep and I couldn’t get out of them.

This was my brother’s first time on the trail. He drives a little too fast, especially since it’s my rig!

This obstacle is new. The Teeter Totter. It was a fun one.

Umm… no I did not! The trail was so muddy and that hill so steep that my tires just spun like racing slicks on ice. No traction whatsoever.

Isaac Newton and his damned laws of gravity, as well as the laws of static and kinetic friction, won that round. Thankfully because I was careful, I did not cause any damage to my rig.

Hey Bruteleenandrane! I don’t believe in coincidences but 6 years ago Mozzie used the exact same words. Do you two know each other?

Even the extra space preceding the question mark is identical in both posts. (Emphases are mine)

You are slowly catching up to the material provided by @Victor1960, and you make us all jealous.

Well spotted. These guys are trying to infiltrate everywhere.
Unfortunately, my time on this forum is diminishing as I have upgraded to a lesser vehicle (Ford) due to towing requirements. There are some pluses and some minuses. I will be selling the GC but will still keep an eye on these forums for a while.
