All 2015 and 2016s do that, probably 2017s too.

Re: Eco mode OFF from now on for me. Better fuel economy?!?

I've noticed in this thread some posters stated they get better gas mileage on highways / freeways with eco on. Just wondering how that can be possible? Vehicle is in 8th gear and RPMS stay exactly the same with eco on or off at highway speeds.

Eco changes shift patterns in city driving to increase gas mileage can't see how it would affect MPG on freeway driving! I keep mine off at all times!

I was wondering that to. Didn't seem to make much sense. In theory at highway cruise it shouldn't matter what driving mode you're in if it's in 8th gear it's in 8th gear.

Correct - but the theory is that at least in ECO mode it's going to up shift sooner to get into 8th gear (and stay in 8th gear) thereby saving a few molecules of gas. .

Correct, but the argument was towards strictly highway drivers where shift points don't really make a difference. So for arguments sake two Grand Cherokees on the highway, one going 70mph in Eco mode, and the other going 70mph with eco OFF. They should be getting exactly the same fuel economy. Right?

Re: Eco mode OFF from now on for me. Better fuel economy?!?

Suppose the shift points aren't optimised? Could it be that eco mode shifts to 8th too soon, causing the engine to work to hard? Or conversely, maybe when there is an incline eco mode doesn't down shift when it should. Being in the highest gear isn't necessarily the most economical.

Not saying this is the case, just throwing out the possibility.

Re: Eco mode OFF from now on for me. Better fuel economy?!?

After 3 years of ownership I've ran my jeep with eco on and off to compare MPG. If it does save any fuel it didn't even add up to 1 MPG more. What it did do is give me sluggish performance with no low end torque.

No, but I was not originally aware that it was also a 5.7 issue. So I need a local volunteer with a 2014 5.7 also.

Re: Eco mode OFF from now on for me. Better fuel economy?!?

I've read (no personal data to back it up) that eco mode also plays with the heating/cooling aggressiveness and the battery charge system. I think it was something I read in the documentation for the GDE tune for the ecodiesel. There was something there about allowing the battery to fall to a lower voltage in eco mode causing trouble with some devices that use the 12V outlet, which they supposedly changed in their tune.

Personally, I just leave eco mode on and bump to sport for the times I anticipate needing a more aggressive move-out. I've played with eco on or off on the highway and didn't really notice any difference.

With ECO on, it seems to drop into MDS mode more often which could have an effect though I don't think mine goes to MDS at 70 or above...

Re: Eco mode OFF from now on for me. Better fuel economy?!?

I have a new 2017 Trailhawk 5.7 and although I have only had it a week, I drove for 3 days for about 300 miles with the ECO on, and about 3 days with it off for about the same distance. I have found that i get about 1 MPG better with it OFF! I know that is not a long time and my engine is still probably in the "break in" period that some people talk about, however I wanted to share my experience so far.

In theory, that works on the flat. However, when hitting an uphill grade, Eco mode might keep the tranny in 8th while Off mode might shift down to 7th.

Honestly, while I notice it shifts up sooner in town, I doubt any of that is really making a big difference. As another poster noted, it's may be 1 MPG due to the fact that the shift points still seem to be close to the same - with a couple hundred RPM from on mode to the other.

I would guess the greater change would be either Normal or Eco vs Sport mode. Sport mode would likely yield a more noticeable change in fuel consumption.

That really says more about how little thought they put into Eco mode to make it more....eco.

My thoughts on how it could be better:

- Ignore 1st gear except for immediately after a cold start. If the Jeep can start off in 2nd in paddle or snow mode, it might as well do it by default in Eco mode.

- Tone down the sensitivity to gear changes. I still say the tranny downshifts too often, even under light acceleration. Plus, I would say the only thing Eco mode does is get the tranny up to 7th and 8th sooner. The other gears seem about the same.

- Allow the engine to drop a couple cylinders when there's little load. There are times where I'm cruising along on a secondary highway at around 45-50, barely touching the accelerator. That would be the perfect opportunity to drop a couple cylinders and run with less power.

As far as the Stop Start feature, I'd rather they just make it an actual hybrid that could run for short distances on battery power, not just turn off when stopped.
