Electric steering pump

We are taking deliver of a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with the 3.6. The build date was November. Will that have the electric steering pump?

Re: Electric steering pump

My Overland V6 build date was Nov. 19. I have looked at the front of the engine to see if there is any obvious change in the serpentine belt, but as far as I can tell it still has the same pattern as shown in the early Pentastar engine pics from about Sept. 2009 when it was announced.

... so, either the steering still uses a belt-driven pump OR they installed an idler wheel in its place so the belt would not have to change.

I do not have a heated/well lit garage to do some more exploring under the hood, but if I find out more I will post here.

Re: Electric steering pump

Thanks, I guess i don't really need it. I love the V6, not sure why unless you need to tow, why the Hemi would be better. It's heavier and not as balanced. The V6 has a lovely growl when revved as well. Thank you for you input!

I'd think it would cost more to fabricate a new part that requires installation in its place (say, $10-20/vehicle, in addition to being another possible point of failure) than just to use a shorter belt (which would be a one time issue as they made the running change).

I'm expecting that in the coming years, we'll need to know what kind of power steering we have when we need to replace the belt.

Re: Electric steering pump

Just to close off this old thread: the electro-hydraulic power steering for the 2011 WK2 was once slated for introduction to the assembly line about mid-Nov. 2010 (ref. WK2 Jeeps and Allpar web sites back in mid-to-Fall 2010). Then nothing more was heard, as this thread indicates.

Now we know that the electro-hydraulic steering will be included in the 2012 model year.

The 2011 WK2 has hydraulic power steering only. No big deal. It works well for me.

Edit: Turns out the electric power steering pump DID make it into some (but not all) 2011 models, a bit later than expected. Check this thread for more info: http://jeepgarage.org/showthread.php?t=24787
