Re: Electric Tow Brake Controller

I do lots of towing and the wiring plug-in adapter for your brake controller is not available yet. Stop looking under the dash for the hidden harness. Believe me, if it existed, Jeep would advertise it. Tekonsha will have one on the market by end of year, or they'll miss my Christmas list.
All the other adapters shown in the different responses are for converting 7 to 4 wire or 4 to 7 or installing wiring that already exist if you have a towing package.
Besides not supplying the wiring harness, Jeep should have supplied the 5th wire on the 4 wire connector that disables the electric surge braking when backing up. This newer 5th wire fits with a 4 wire connector but just adds a 5th connection in line so no rewiring is needed if you only have or require a 4 wire. It's pretty simple to add, only have to connect to your backup lights.

Hey, still looking for running boards/side steps.

Did get my front trailer hitch from Curt Manufacturing. Still installing. Instructions say 35 minutes for a professional! I'm just a backyard mechanic with 45 yrs experience and am on my 3rd day!!

Re: Electric Tow Brake Controller

I ordered my new 2011 GCL with the tow package. It was built on 12/1, and I took possession on 12/15. Pigtail connector 68089300AA Rev:A was in the glove box. This is the exact one as in the pic posted by Plasticar and with the same instructions. The trouble is that the instructions identify the four wires by color, but those colors do not match those on the pigtail connector itself. Therefore, I don't know which wire does what. My controller is a high-end Tekonsha that I had in my former Liberty. I know the function of each of its wires, so I could easily splice its pigtail to the Jeep pigtail if I only knew which wire was which on the latter. So, Plasticar and Pattyboy, did you install yours yet, and how did you overcome this problem? Thanks.

Re: Electric Tow Brake Controller

Thanks, Pattyboy. So, do I understand that you're going to compare the pigtail that you (and I) have to the newest one at the parts department and try to learn the functions of each of the wires from the instructions on the new version?

I had thought of trying to figure it out with a multimeter and might yet try that. The four wires have to be these: ground; signal from brake light switch on brake pedal; 12-volt power to controller; and output line running back to trailer brakes. With the pigtail plugged on under the dashboard, and with the ends stripped and taped to a board to keep them from accidentally touching, it should be easy to find the 12-volt power supply wire as the only one that's charged. Likewise, the signal wire from the pedal will become charged when the pedal is pressed. (It's likely to be the smallest of the four.) Once the 12-volt supply is found, it and the multimeter can be used to differentiate between the ground wire and the output line to the brakes, which will be isolated. That should do it! Just splice everything correctly (and securely, because your braking depends on it) to the like wire on your controller's pigtail, and you're ready to go towing.

I have looked under the dashboard and found the plug into which the Jeep pigtail goes. You only need to wiggle out one small "Christmas tree" fastener near the on-board diagnostics plug to drop the left end of the liner enough to see it. Above the parking brake pedal is a white plastic box with lots of wires. Above that is the gray connector that looks like the one on the pigtail.

I've also found that the trailer tow circuitry is protected by a 30-amp fuse in cavity J3 of the main under-hood fuse box.

Don't anybody be misled by that drawing of the whole dashboard torn out of a Commander. That's only necessary to install the entire Mopar trailer wiring harness in a vehicle without the tow package. Those of us with the factory tow package already have all of that and need only to connect our brake controllers correctly. Neither should anybody be concerned that they have a seven-pole trailer connector while the Jeep brake controller pigtail has only four wires. The brake controller doesn't need to connect to the circuits for tail and marker lights, turn signals, trailer battery, etc., etc.

Re: Electric Tow Brake Controller

OTB, 68089300AA (revA) turns out to be one in the same , parts dept. pointed out that to me today. it (the new number ) is place on the out side of the plastic bag that 68089300AA comes in so 68089300AA is exactly the same as the new number 68088278AA and so it continues waiting on the big melt in nyc to install pat

Re: Electric Tow Brake Controller

So just to make sure:

Bottom line is if you have a Class IV tow package all you need is the pigtail to connect your electric brake controller to the jeep correct?

I was hoping that they'd revise the instruction sheet in the bag to make the wire color coding jive with the real world. Perhaps such a revision would have justified the new part number. Did you notice whether they did?
