Emergency water fording

Vermont is getting hammered nearly every single day with torrential rain, resulting in flash flooding. Today there were cars backed up for about a half-mile on a local road, and I pulled to the front of the line - which included a few big 4x4s such as Rams - to find an 18-inch-deep (and rising), 25-foot-wide river raging across the road, rushing brown water with mud and even some chunks of washed-out asphalt. I jacked my Airlift up as high as it would go and plowed, slowly but steadily, right through it. No problem.

Of note: I have a Volant CAI installed, and there have been concerns that water fording may compromise the filter as the box is open on the bottom, toward the wheel well. I can report that I had zero issues with that today.

I am psyched; it's instances like this that make me glad - and proud - to drive a Jeep.

I started a revolution of other vehicles driving across! Except for the guy in the Prius, he was smart enough not to try it.

You're lucky the asphalt was not washed out along your track, Jeep or not.

That's exactly what I was thinking...and probably why the bigger 4x4s didn't go first. If there's water going over the road you can be fairly certain it's moving underneath as well.

Glad you had no issues though!

Re: Emergency water fording

I can remember bailing out the rear slider of a pickup as it went down doing something similar to this. Keep in mind you never know whats under the water or not under the water when you think it should be.

Re: Emergency water fording

Going through 18 inches of standing water is much different than going through fast running stream/river. You can float away in a heartbeat.

Kind of like trying to pick up 20lbs dumbbell from floor vs trying to catch it after it was thrown up.

Pretty common cause of drowning in floods. Once fast moving water gets up to the height of the underside, I reckon you're history . Always wait for a rabbit to show you how deep it is.

Glad the OP made it across, sure not a risk I'd ever take as a father .
