End of week 1 - first impressions

OK, 1 week and a couple hundred miles on a Dark Charcoal Limited.
Here are some initial thoughts:

Iím amazed at how nice this vehicle is... and not just for a Jeep.

My wife works for Audi, and has had multiple, and is very impressed.
From small touches like lighting in the door handles and bottle holders in the door; to the look, feel, and fit/finish of the dash, doors and seats; to the amount of technology in this thing.. itís pretty remarkable. This is my 6th Jeep over the years, and it is head and shoulders above any previous.

As far as the Pentastar goesÖ I did not drive the Hemi, but find the 3.6 plenty adequate. Now, I traded in a JK so it may all be relative, but I find the engine very smooth and Iím pleased with the pick-up. I wonít be towing much so that was not a factor for me.

Some of my favorite features:

  • Select-terrain. Sport mode is fun to drive.
  • Panoramic sunroof.
  • Love the keyless enter and go.
  • The vehicle is extremely quiet. You can tell by the way the doors shut that itís sealed very well.
  • It's very comfortable. Even the (reclining/heated) back seat is very comfortable.
  • There are a ton of features, most all of which can be disabled in the EVIC.
The backup camera, auto-tilting rearview mirros and sensors are nice, but I'm still adjusting. Call me old fashioned....

So far the only ďissueĒ has been that they shipped it without the NAV unit. No problem - the dealer has already ordered it and offered a loaner while itís installed.

If the reliability is there, this will be in my garage for a long time.

That is saying quite a bit, and seems to be what they were shooting for in this remake. There seems to be a lot of thought that went into what was wrong in previous Jeeps, and how they could improve upon that to bring the standard closer to the competition at this price point.

Re: End of week 1 - first impressions

The first things she commented on were how quiet it is, the fit/finish and much higher quality interior materials. I really liked my 06, but to say this one is an improvement doesn't do it justice. She was also impressed by the technology. Things like all 3 rear view mirrors dimming, auto high beams, backup cams, keyless enter and go's are all things her car doesn't have. What it does have is an unnecessarily complicated center stack while everything is very clean and intuitive in the Jeep.

Now, I won't have mine on the Rubicon so I can't comment on how the changes have affected hardcore off-road ability. Give me another PA winter anything resembling last year and a hunting season later this year, and I should have a much better sense of capability (that I suspect will satisfy what a large percentage of JGC buyers will ever need)

A lot of things I've noticed are certainly things you don't 'need'. A good example is how slowly the glove box opens if you just open it and let go. A typical car (American cars to-date in particular) would have just slammed open. Another is the felt-lined wheel-wells to cut down on stones and other noise. It's just nice to see a concerted attention to detail and a desire to be compared to some of the best.

Re: End of week 1 - first impressions

The change in the interior blows me away. I was looking at some of the German offerings this past spring just because I was getting desperate - I think the GC has at least met their standards, if not exceeded them. It's just that great of an update.

Agreed! I wasn't planning to buy another GC although it was always very good for what I needed. This iteration is a welcome revision, and one that I will eventually order due to the thoughtful changes.

Re: End of week 1 - first impressions

We looked briefly at the Audi Q5. Yes, it drives nicely, but it also lacks Jeep's cajones and is big-time boring to look at -- inside and out.

As is, the WK2 already rules in its class. If the 2012 gets the 8-speed box, direct injection and dual exhaust, everything else on the market will be just vegetables.

We did too, mainly because of her discount.

In the end It just wasn't me.... and the Jeep was.

Re: End of week 1 - first impressions

I know we all doesn't like to hear that, but the interior you all are praising here is designed by a German. So it is kind of meaningless comparing it with the German standard because it is German standard ...and it is awesome the way it is!

The hemis have dual exhaust. The pentastars don't. This is how they differentiate them now that there is no badging to advertise that the vehicle contains a large engine.
