Re: Engine oil #2 (full synthetic)

I'm not a lubrication engineer, but the sum total of what I've heard is that you have to worry about both mileage and time..

If you run low mileage because you only do half a dozen long trips every year and otherwise leave it in the garage, then the time isn't so much an issue..

but if you run low mileage because you mostly do two miles to the bagel shop and back, then you never get the oil hot enough to evaporate the water and other stuff, and you need to get that stuff out of the crankcase on a 4-6 month schedule.

and, at the end of the day, there is nothing wrong with pampering your vehicle.

I asked the dealership yesterday when I had my oil changed to full synthetic (how often should it be changed) they said about every 5500 miles. Was thinking with full synthetic I was good for around 7000 miles or within one year? I was running conventional and was going 5000 miles between changes.

My question is:

For those of you running full synthetic how often are you getting it changed? I do not tow anything just normal hiway /city driving but it does get extremely hot here in south FL 95+ in summer.

I put about 8500 miles on a year.

Just make sure they are giving you full synthetic and not a synthetic blend which is half syn and half regular. I had a friend who thought he had been getting a full syn change only to discover years later it was only blend, dealer was calling it synthetic but on receipt sure enogh if said blend, my friend had just never looked at the receipt closely.
On my Jeep dealers website they don't even list the price of a conventional oil change. Okay, don't want to open up a can of worms but the service writer told me by 2017 all the new mopar vehicles will be running full synthetic. Not sure where he's getting his info. from but I really think he was just blowing smoke.......
