Engine oil #2 (full synthetic)

Recently I started a thread about what type of oil I should use. The majority recommended full synthetic. Long story short I am now running full synthetic in my Jeep.

I asked the dealership yesterday when I had my oil changed to full synthetic (how often should it be changed) they said about every 5500 miles. Was thinking with full synthetic I was good for around 7000 miles or within one year? I was running conventional and was going 5000 miles between changes.

My question is:

For those of you running full synthetic how often are you getting it changed? I do not tow anything just normal hiway /city driving but it does get extremely hot here in south FL 95+ in summer.

I put about 8500 miles on a year.

Re: Engine oil #2 (full synthetic)

Full synthetic is really not needed in these engines. Regular oil has come a long way. I don't think it is worth the extra money. I do 5k mile oil changes with regular oil on my JGCs through out the years. My 2004 had over 140k on it. My 2008 WK had 100k on it with no issues.

The only engines I use synthetic in were my old 90s turbo engines that I beat on pretty regularly.

I dont Auto X or drag race my WK2.

Re: Engine oil #2 (full synthetic)

if you only do 8500 miles a year, I'd probably change it every 6 months... to get the acids etc out of the crankcase..

At that mileage interval, and with no frigid weather, synthetic might well be overkill.

But that's just me.

Re: Engine oil #2 (full synthetic)

You can go 7500 miles easy breezy.
You can go 10K (with good driving conditions).
But I like a little Margin of error, in case I forget to change it or don't have time.
So I often go over 7500 miles.

I've had my oil tested a dozen times.
You might as well put cheap oil if you change it every 5K.

Best thing it to probably use the usage meter and don't go over 1 year, not the end of the world if you did.

You're probably right it may be overkill but from everything I've read and have been told FS is far superior than conventional in every way especially when you first start up. I plan on keeping the Jeep for at least 10+ years or 150,000 miles. I calculated it to be about $500.00 more at 100,000 miles to run FS or $41.00 more per year. My thought is why not go with the best protection possible.

Re: Engine oil #2 (full synthetic)

The dealership is looking forward to seeing you and your money as often as possible. You should be fine following the monitor as it is calibrated for non-synthetic, so you would be well on the safe side following it.

Re: Engine oil #2 (full synthetic)

Regardless of whether or not you use preserved dinosaurs or full synthetic oils, the oil change interval is the same...and is in your vehicle manual. 10,000 miles for a MY14 unless you're considered a "heavy duty cycle user". Dealers will very often suggest a shorter interval...no surprise since they make money on that.

(preserved dinosaurs LOL) It actually says under NO circumstances should oil changes exceed 10,000 miles or 12 months.

Your engine doesn't need it. So what.
You don't really need to change your oil that often. So what.

It is YOUR engine, where hopefully you aren't insecure enough to let someone else change your mind.

That price seems a tad high, does your dealer have prepaid oil changes where you get a small discount on full synth.

My time is more valuable than the hour it takes to get a dealer change, and they are pretty good about warning me of things they spot while changing it, plus topping up any other fluids free, minor "oh by the way" items, etc. Unfortunately their coffee quality has sagged a bit lately, but since the co-owner is often in the building and some of us complained, hopefully they'll spend another quarter per pound next time.

The only cause effect I would claim is that you are the type willing to go the extra mile in one area of vehicle maintenance, you are likely to be the type that will also take care of the other areas of your vehicle.

Guess it's a good thing I don't drink coffee! The dealership is charging $69.95 for full synthetic oil change. Yes, I do go the extra mile to take care of my Jeep! I've owned it for 2 years (it sits uncovered outside) it shines more now then the day I purchased it

I do a full synthetic change every 6000 miles which works out to every 6 months for me, once in spring once n fall. a little more often then what is necessary but like you I plan to keep it until the wheels fall off so the little extra protection doesn't hurt. if I were someone that changed cars every 4 or 5 years I would use regular oil and change every 10k. the synthetic to me is only something to do if you plan to be in the 200-300k miles club with the jeep.

$69.99 is not a bad price for a full synthetic change at the dealer. I pay $48 per change to do it myself with Pennzoil ultra platinum full synthetic, which is about as cheap as you will get for a full synthetic change. so $20 more for them to do it is not a bad price. Just make sure they are giving you full synthetic and not a synthetic blend which is half syn and half regular. I had a friend who thought he had been getting a full syn change only to discover years later it was only blend, dealer was calling it synthetic but on receipt sure enogh if said blend, my friend had just never looked at the receipt closely.
