Engine oil question?

Iím sure this has been discussed before but want to get some opinions/advice. When I purchased my Jeep it came with 4 free (conventional oil) changes. Now that I am coming up on two years of ownership Iím getting coupons from Mopar (4 oil changes for $50.00) I am not sure if I should continue with conventional oil or go synthetic? I also see they have semi synthetic. I am not sure what the differences / benefits are between semi or full synthetic but there is a significant cost difference. I know you don't have to change synthetic as often as conventional but from my understanding itís the filter that gets dirty more so than oil breakdown. Iíve never ran synthetic before is it worth spending $79.95 for a single oil change or would you just continue with conventional oil
Costs differences
Express Lane Oil & Filter Change

$29.95 CONVENTIONAL
$55.95 SEMI-SYNTHETIC
$79.95 SYNTHETIC

Re: Engine oil question?

Yes(IMO), it is; full synthetic oil that is. I started using Mobil One back in the 70s and have never used dino oil since then. I switched over to Pennzoil Premium 5W20 in my last/first oil change in my recently purchased 2013 5.7L V8. I believe the specs/features of full synthetic oil outweighs the cost.

Re: Engine oil question?

How often are you changing the oil on their dime?

tough to beat 4 oil changes for 50$, I assume that includes the filter and oil?

I have the hemi and will run synthetic and Mobil1 or Amsoi or Fram ultra filter. I will change oil ever 5K or so, but I do all my own maintenance.

Re: Engine oil question?

If I spend $40K (or $60K, or $90K) for a vehicle, I'm not going to cheapen out on the oil change, especially when it's only once a year. Full synthetic in all my vehicles.

Re: Engine oil question?

Does the 3.6L ship with synthetic or conventional oil? I assume the warranty only requires conventional?

Re: Engine oil question?

Objectively, there is likely no real benefit to synth if you follow the recommended schedules and possibly change just a bit early.

Having said that, I've run pure synth for over the past two decades and continue to do so. Just possibly it has more headroom for emergencies like interstellar invasions, the coming battle between Metropolis and Gotham, and Magnum ice cream bars becoming extinct. But, they are my vehicles, and I choose to run only pure synth.

I do have small justification in that you can buy synth that isn't made by taking dino pee apart anymore now that you can make it from dino farts. Very small....

I'm putting on about 9000 miles a year. I'm changing my oil every 5000 - 5500 miles. I have one free oil change left which I need to do before Oct 14th otherwise I lose it. Yes, the $50.00 included oil and filter.

Seems the consensus so far is to go with the full synthetic. I just wasn't sure it really made a difference since I don't tow or really drive a lot of miles.

The 3.6L comes with conventional and that's what the manual recommends.

If you are having the dealer handle the maintenance, I would personally go with conventional oil and change it when the light comes on. Depending upon driving habits and how long you keep the vehicle, the extra $50 per oil change could add up over the life of the vehicle.

I use Pennzoil (1 qt synthetic and 5 qts conventional) and had an oil analysis conducted. The oil had 5,700 miles on it and the TBN was still at 5.5. Based upon the TBN, I could have gone to at least 7,500 miles.

I had over 275,000 miles on my Yukon when I sold it. I ran synthetic from day one. Never had an mechanical issue. Also run RP it in my GTO

Re: Engine oil question?

Synthetic is better but ... If I were you I would use the coupons and once they run out go to synthetic especially if you do your own oil changes. Even if you let the dealer do it than extra $50 once a year is not that bad for extra insurance that synthetic gives.

As a full disclosure I also own old Pathfinder with 215k miles. I use conventional oil since manual calls for 6 month oil chage interval and I only put less than 3k per year (1.5k per oil change) on it since I've got the Jeep. Just doesn't make sense in my case to throw away good synthetic oil after 6 months so I use conventional and it runs just fine.

Re: Engine oil question?

Meh, manual says regular oil, I use regular oil. Change it no later than when the minder dings at me. I'm at 86,000 miles without a hiccup. I've seen other cars hit far over 100K (one was 250K) on nothing but conventional oil changed regularly. The key is changing it according to recommendations in the manual. Once you're doing that, synthetic isn't really worth it for most vehicles.

I wouldn't and haven't spent the $ on synthetic oil in mine. If I bought a brand new one, I still wouldn't. Synthetic won't hurt, but modern oil is so good you just don't hear of problems that could have been avoided with synthetic oil.
