Explorer better than WK2 in sand?

This is for my Audi Q7 neighbor who just bought a new Ford Exploder for his wife and thinks it is going to be better than the WK2 in snow and sand. Um, okaaaay. He's a cop and "thinks" he is always correct on all issues but I can forgive him because he's otherwise a truly good person.

Realize that he has already been shown my WK2 tail lights repeatedly on the street in both his Q7 and now in his wife's Exploder. But, I cannot wait to leave him behind on an un-plowed road, trail or a sand dune with that Exploder. I found this little Youtube gem and thought some laughter would take the edge off of any holiday stress some of you may have. Fooled you all didn't I?

a cop that can afford a Q7? stealing drug dealer's money during a bust

and tires play a big part in traction also, even the best 4x4 will fail.

LOL, no. He has worked many years, made some impressive gains during the tech stock bubble and his wife also works. As for tires, I have yet to get stuck with 20" Forteras and have certainly been in deeper sand than the 6 inches provided at the auto show. The Ford people flattened the sandy "off-road" section at the auto show because of this incident.

Re: Explorer better than WK2 in sand?

You can get a WK2 with a low range, Explorer you can't.

Re: Explorer better than WK2 in sand?

Well first you have to tell him the correct name of his new vehicle "Exploder"

Re: Explorer better than WK2 in sand?

Have you seen the issues on the new explorers? The press only talks about how horrible the MFT system is, but nothing about the numerous leaks, overheating, and noise issues. I laugh every time I see a new one on the road.

Re: Explorer better than WK2 in sand?

LOL LOL LOL thanks for that vid! Hey Bmwister, is that the same one that you were telling me about that conked out at the show too? I looked at Explorers before getting the Grand but could not stand the Ford Touch garbage and the fact that it's primary duty is FWD...total turn off for me. I'm stoked about picking the Grand over all the others I looked at and it's been really good in muck. Jeep2011 I've heard about issues beyond the Touch stuff and saw a few Explorers on flatbed tows recently. I had hopes Ford turned the corner but I think someone sadly backed them into an alley instead.

Re: Explorer better than WK2 in sand?

The explorer is nice I guess, but I wouldn't class it anywhere near the JGC. That would be like comparing a burger from Burger King with a nice South African Steak

Re: Explorer better than WK2 in sand?

I loved my old 1995 and 1999 Explorers. The new ones... not so much. Very glad I went with the WK2.

Re: Explorer better than WK2 in sand?

I rented a spanking new Explorer Limited when they first came out back in February. I returned it after two days. It was that bad. The Insync system was downright dangerous. The interior was full of cheap plastic and pleather.
Sad part was I really wanted to like it as I have been a Ford guy my entire life. Before the Jeep, it is the only American brand I have ever purchased.

Re: Explorer better than WK2 in sand?

I believe that the AWD Explorer is basically a front wheel drive vehicle (Tarus platform) with rear wheel drive added through a friction driven clutch assembly. With enough spin as in a sand situation the clutch will get very hot and fail and the AWD will revert to front wheel drive only. The JGC has a true gear driven transfer case providing power to all four wheels. No real comparison in off road capability.
