Extended Test Drive V6 Limited

Yesterday I was finally able to rent a V6 Limited for the day. I drove it about 7 hours and went about 350 miles. Mostly I wanted to judge its comfort on long trips, and its passing ability. I also was testing the V6's climbing ability as I went over a pass with two 4000 foot saddles. I must say that I was impressed with the V6. IMO, the JGC equipped with a V6 is more than adequate in power, at least if you do not plan to haul anything and do not live in a mountainous area with many steep grades. It climbed the pass without downshifting until I had to slow down going around a snow covered curve, and then speed back up. It also passed a vehicle on a flat section of a two lane highway where I had to accelerate from 63 to 80, and it did so without difficulty. My mileage for the trip was 23 mpg as measured from the pump, not the EVIC (which had the mileage at 23.9mpg). Not bad for having a pass to climb. If I lived in a place like Colorado, I might think the V6 was underpowered, but for my driving I think it will be fine. Note that I do not haul anything.

My wife and I also thought the comfort was good. We especially liked sitting high up again. It has been more that 10 years since I had a Ford F250, and I had forgotten how much better it is to sit in a car in a more upright position. Almost like sitting in a chair at home. That means a lot for those of us with aging backs.

Anyway, I am now ready to purchase a JGC if I can find a Limited model for the right price. I still may end up with the Hemi as the incentives on the Hemi are very tempting. But I can rest assured if I can find a V6 for the right price, it has enough power for my needs.

eric.

Edit: I actually climbed the same pass twice, once going and once returning and still got 23 mpg. On the return trip I started at a little above sea level and topped out at slightly more than 4000 feet.

Re: Extended Test Drive V6 Limited

Glad to hear you were okay with the V6. It really is a personal choice as to what is best. I recently traveled Skyline Drive, Blue Ridge Parkway, and Great Smoky Mountains and did fine with the V6. Of course 6000' elevations are not the same as Colorado in which case the V8 might be the better choice. Good Luck finding your JGC.

Re: Extended Test Drive V6 Limited

Depending how much you drive going with the Hemi would be an expensive option. Based on its additional cost of $2500, 20,000 miles/ year, four years of ownership and gas at $3.75 (that's what it was when I bought mine), an extra 10 cents/ gallon for 89 octane for the Hemi, and the advertised EPA combined ratings, I estimated present value cost of well over $6000. True, gas is cheaper now but who knows what it will be next year.

I don't think the mountains in Colorado are any steeper than they are here in the mountain counties of NC. If anything the more efficient combustion chamber of the Pentastar should make high altitude driving better that te antiquated Hemi design.

A lot of hemi owners use 87 octane without any problems and if you drive mostly highway, the hemi does quite well as far as MPG. Different needs for different people. It's difficult to calculate the actual cost difference/savings since there are so many factors involved.

I don't know the difference in grade between the east coast vs. west coast mountains, but they are more than double the elevation as compared to NC or TN. I think I would definitely have a V8 if I lived in a mountainous region in any part of the country. Just my preference.

Re: Extended Test Drive V6 Limited

89 octane is 10 cents CHEAPER than 87 octane where I live. 89 octane is currently 3.17 per gallon. That's what I paid yesterday.

Also, the MSRP of the Hemi engine is $1,695. The $2,195 price includes the tow package on Overlands. I think there is a significant rebate on Hemis on 2013/2012 Grand Cherokees now. It might be $1,500. So the engine ends up being the same initial cost as the V6 currently.

That's interesting. Higher octane is always more expensive in my neck of the woods. Just curious, what area are you in?

Re: Extended Test Drive V6 Limited

I'm going to guess Iowa because the 89 octane in Iowa is cheaper because the state subsidizes a portion of the gas tax on the 89 octane fuel. This subsidy is used to promote ethanol use.

They do use ethanol in 87 octane fuel. Ethanol is alcohol. And alcohol changes the octane level of gasoline. 90% 87 octane gasoline mixed with 10% ethanol equals the 89 octane blended fuel we buy here in Iowa.

I drive about 7500 miles per year with a mix of about 25% suburban and 75% highway. So for me, the cost would not be overly excessive with today's prices. However, I hear what you are saying with who knows what tomorrow will bring. Right now there are incentives for the Hemi in Laredo and Limited models so they are paying you to take them!

That sounds like one of my test drives I'm surprised no one has called the police on me yet.
