Extended Warranty Advice? GC WK2 (Canada)

Hey all,

I'm new to posting on this forum, but often come to read about Jeeps. I have a 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited (3.6 4x4) which I love, and have driven quite a bit over the almost 2 years I have owned it. I'm up in Canada and am about to hit the 60,000km bumper to bumper warranty. The dealer has quoted me $1850, which was more than I was expecting, to bring my bumper to bumper warranty up to the 5yr/100k of the powertrain. I haven't had any issues with this Jeep so far, but had an 07 Limited in the family which was nothing but problems. The almost $2k seems really steep to me, and I am wondering how much (knock on wood) can really go wrong. I know there are some expensive components like the head unit, and A/C, but I don't really expect those to break before I hit 100,000km. The other avenue I explored was extending everything as far as possible, which is only 7 yr/160,000km, and that was just south of $5000, which frankly seems a tad crazy to me. I know the higher end a vehicle, the more expensive the warranty, and if this was german I wouldn't hesitate. But at the end of the day I feel like it is an American car, for which parts should be pretty easy to come by, and easy to work on.

I have 500km to decide on whether or not to go for the extended warranty, and am nervous about driving an out of warranty vehicle. Any one have any tips/ feeling on my situation? I know it is a gamble either way, but wouldn't mind input from others about it.

Thanks in advanced ladies and gents.

PS. Sorry if I have posted this improperly, I'm not well-versed in forums.

Re: Extended Warranty Advice? GC WK2

I'm not yet a Wk2 owner but have owned jeeps in the past and I'm in the process of preparing to buy a WK2. Unfortunately I don't have much experience with the differences between US and Canada, but in the US you also have the option to purchase a lifetime warranty through Mopar. Something you might want to check out. You can get online quotes from Ziegler (search for this on the site) for comparison, but again not sure if they are transferable to Canada. Based on my experience with Jeeps and the level of technology found in the new ones I'd recommend buying the extended warranty if you are planning to keep it a long time.

There is some good advice in the "Maxcare Options" thread. I believe Maxcare is good in the US and Canada.

Moparwarrantys.com has better prices than Zigler and it's legit. I had one a couple of years back when I had a 2011.

Re: Extended Warranty Advice? GC WK2

Hi,
I have an Overland 2011, I bought second hand from the dealer in 2013 30000 km and it was under 5 years warranty so I continued with the extended warranty.
After hitting the 60000km the car started to go south... Not sure if I was unlucky or what but I had to change, the fan, the starter the 2 front suspension my dashboard leather was making waves and the alternator.
All this in 9months.
The good part from all this work,I spent almost nothing except time at the garage.

So from my side the extended warranty seems a must.

I still have 6 month on it, I ll see if anything else goes wrong.

Re: Extended Warranty Advice? GC WK2

I have a 2014 Overland with 34,000 miles on it. I bought the lifetime Maxcare warranty (purchased new) from Ziegler ($2300 on a payment plan no interest.) and the Road Hazard Warranty (est $380). Under warranty, I have the following:

1. The Radio/Nav system replaced est. $2000.00

2. The tire (nail in sidewall) $26o.00

3. TPMS $58.00

4. Bent Wheel (bent rim) $439.00 You get 4 rims and 4 tires over the life of the warranty which is 7 years.

Total= $2757.00 in parts and labor.

As you already know, buying a warranty with a higher mileage is more expensive. Good luck.

Not worth it!!!.

Your are better off just buying CAA instead ($110/year).

Dealer just want your cash .

If you can get 3 years coverage, maybe.

I don't see $2000 repairs in 2 years for a truck with such low kms.

Plus you will need that cash for your 100km tune up(just paid $500 for my Hemi tune up).

Lastly ,dealerships drag out warranty complaints.
"Cannot duplicate".
By time you get issues resolved your 2 year time period might be almost over.

I bought the 7yr. warranty when I purchased mine new.

I wish I didn't. It's just too hard to to have dealership resolve complaints.

Plus ,I want to trade in but reluctant because I invested in extended warranty.

For a bit of peace of mind you might want to get an independent dealership to do a full vehicle examination of your truck.

Good luck!.

Re: Extended Warranty Advice? GC WK2 (Canada)

I bought the 5yr/100k warranty on my 14 wk2, I paid $2145.00 for it .....

Main reason I got it was for peace of mind.

Re: Extended Warranty Advice? GC WK2 (Canada)

I know some people that got screwed by extend warranties. They missed one or two check ups and their warranty was void when they needed something taken care of.

Dealer: Oh your transfer case has a crack in it? No problem

Owner: cool

Dealer: Oh wait we see that you missed a oil change. If you check the terms of agreement you'll see that your warranty is now void.

Re: Extended Warranty Advice? GC WK2 (Canada)

I would not get it. Just remember that they are not in the business of losing money. It may pay off for a few but most will never spend what the warranty cost. Every consumer group I checked say its a rip off and recommend against it. I have 70k miles so far and my repairs have not even come close to what these warranties cost. Your choice.

MY 2012 has been pretty good -80,000 km, but now it needs the rack replaced (common problem) and it's gonna cost +$1000, so $ 2000 for an extended warranty doesn't seem that bad considering some big ticket items in there.
