Exterior Protection

I am curious - is the exterior protection package on the Jeep worth it? Sounds like it is around 500$ but I wouldn't expect the Jeep to rust that much before then?

Re: Exterior Protection

I am not aware of what this package entails, I am assuming it is something the dealer adds on. If so and without knowing exactly what in includes I would lean on the side of saying it is not worth it. You should find out exactly what they are going to do. If they say anything like "polymer protection" etc...those are fancy names for a wax coat.

I have heard of a product called opti-coat that provides a very long lasting polymer coating on a vehicle, it looks great and beads water very well (does not look as good as a fresh wax job, but lasts very long). If they are applying opti-coat it may be worth the price as the vial for 1 car costs about $80. I have no first hand experience about this product, but have read some amazing reviews and plan on doing my car this summer.

Re: Exterior Protection

Depends on what it is, but from a dealer I wouldn't buy anything.

There is a local rustproofing place up where I grew up that charges about $300 for a car to undercoat, they have a lifetime warranty with it and it is well worth it, every time you go to a dealer they will be cursing you because it gets everywhere but we have never had a vehicle rust on us.

Re: Exterior Protection

I live in the Northeast where we have salt covered roads and "zillions" of Jeeps. I have not seen a rusty undamaged Jeep that is less 25 years old.

Re: Exterior Protection

22PLE silica glass coating, Esoteric Signature Wax(will bond to glass coat), Dodo Juice Supernatural Hybrid...these are some good options. Nothing from the dealer is worth it, and they probably aren't using good mf towels, proper pads etc. my BMW dealer said they have a coating, like 22ple, opti coat, etc, but said they were charging like $800 for it. A bottle of 22ple big enough to do several cars is $150. I'm going to do a black Cayenne full paint correction(fix all the scratches),22ple to paint, wheels, trim, engine clean, interior clean/leather treatment, etc for $500, and it's black. Just saying, doubt they are giving the same attention to your ride.

Re: Exterior Protection

As others have said, don't do it. If you want your paint sealed and are willing to pay that kind of money, take it to a reputable detailer who will give it a full detail including paint correction and seal with something like Opticoat. I can guarantee the dealer isn't doing anything close to the quality of work a good detailer will do.

Re: Exterior Protection

along those lines yes. I'm going with this for the paint. Already used the trim protectant and the metal protectant.

Re: Exterior Protection

My dealer offered something similar, but not at this price. They wanted almost $1k for it and they guy tried telling me this is the same thing they apply on airplanes to keep the paint pristine. They only thing I did like that they offered in the package was they would cover any paint defects and would repaint the entire vehicle as a part of the package. I still opted out, but that did spike my interest.

Re: Exterior Protection

Any paint defects would come from the factory I would guess. Any defects after whatever coating they put on, shouldn't cause paint defects unless they don't know what they're doing, and it should only be a defect of the coating, and shouldn't need to repaint the jeep. Even the 22PLE after it fully cures, if there any issues, you only have to hit that spot with some polish, IPA wipe, and reapply. Probably to avoid any issues, use some Blackfire Wet Diamond(super easy to use, great looks and durability) or Esoteric Signature Wax(also easy, not as slick, better depth and durability).

Lol I fly for a living and I had my own detaling business in college detailing the airplanes of the rich and famous. We never used anything but aircraft wax on planes......Nothing to special by anymeans plus its very rare for planes to even have a clear coat.....Very expensive. I love what dealers come up with!!!!
We used mainly a product called aerogloss and I use it on my cars too but not my wk2. It has a great cleaning agent in it. Great for exhaust stains.....200 bucks for 5 gallons....

If what he was saying was correct and at that price for such a small amount to wax a car it would cost 250 grand to wax a plane;0)......Not happenin!
