Re: Facination with chrome on the WK2

I like the chrome on my Limited. It is not too much... compared to Summit. Although, I keep thinking if I should get rid of the side chrome molding and put the SRT "GC" lettering. I also keep thinking if I should paint the rear chrome brow to body color. Not because i hate that chrome... but just to keep my Jeep a bit different.

Cheers,
-A

Re: Facination with chrome on the WK2

For me it all has to do with balance. I have a darker color on both my vehicles and the chrome balances it out. I would not want Chrome mirrors, Fog lamps, or mesh, that is getting to much on the vehicle. Same with same color grille with rest of vehicle. Makes me think of cheap vehicle, AKA Patirot, Compass.

Re: Facination with chrome on the WK2

I drive for 12 hours a day for work and a vast majority of the Summit owners I see are over 50 years old. Old people like chrome since that's what was popular before the 2000's.

I personally thing chrome looks hideous and is the main reason I bought the Altitude in the first place. I understand small amounts of it but Jeep goes overboard on the Summits. The Overlands have an allowable amount.

So just out of curiosity why do you like/dont like chrome on the exterior of your vehicle? Why does your vehicle need to have so much chrome?
I can't really help you. I think it is an age thing. I have always liked chrome. It may be an age thing or generational. Jeep gives you several options starting with laredo, special editions and SRT for non chrome fans.
The Summit provides chrome for those who like it and as one gets older they are probably more positioned in life to be able to afford it. Without the Chrome or the option to buy a Summit I would have to start looking at alternative makes which is a course I do not want to take because this Grand Cherokee is so good. I am sure with all its options of base through to "fully chromed" Jeep is going to steel customers from the camps of Audi, BMW, Merc. etc.

Re: Facination with chrome on the WK2

I am a fan of minimalist chrome. I am ok with subtle use for highlights.

Having said that, I am the owner of a Limited with the chrome package. Why would I buy a vehicle with lots of chrome when I am not a fan of chrome? The deal was too good to pass up. I buy off the lot from my best friend. A few options either way is no big deal to me. Most important is that my family and I love the vehicle very much.

A funny thing is that for a period of a week, I drove around with the chrome side-step on just one side. I had taken one side-step off to see what the family preferred for looks and more importantly for getting in and out. They preferred the side-steps mounted.

Though this post focuses on chrome, I will digress slightly and talk about black wheels. I am not a fan of black wheels at all. Living in Canada, I see many vehicles with winter tires mounted on dedicated black steel rims. From a distance, black steel wheels look similar to fancy aliminum painted wheels. I just don't get this black wheel thing. I don't lose sleep over any of this. No harm intended to anyone, each to their own.

I am in my early fifties. I am not sure if this excuses me or condemns me.

Once you are at the "fully chromed" Summit level, I think it is priced too close to the premium brands you mentioned. We were considering diesel to replace the wife's BMW 535xiT and at $55K the Summit is now in X5 territory. The pricing and excessive chrome is a turn off to me and with BMW offering incentives on diesel along with the standard free maintenance, the Summit becomes a hard sell.

Re: Facination with chrome on the WK2

De-chromed is an older generation 1980s-2000s thing. If you like de-chrome, you are old school and are showing your age. The youngsters (new generation 2010s) like a bit of chrome highlights. It adds just a bit of class. Most of America hates the plain in your face look, but we are all different and it is a subjective thing. Do what you like, just don't be shoving that plain crap down our throat .

Re: Facination with chrome on the WK2

Is it 100% certain that we can't order the Overland with some of the standard Summit options like HK stereo, blind spot, adaptive headlights, etc?

Re: Facination with chrome on the WK2

I am going to chime in here, as a fan of balance.

If I had the time (and I do not) - I would take the chrome off of the mirrors and grille on my Overland, as well as the rear 'brow'. (Does anyone want to trade???) I have enough trouble keeping up with maintaining the appearance of my truck - let alone buying applying the gear to de-chrome my various components.

So - in review: I removed the chrome badges because that is a quick mod. BUT I have the polished 18in wheels that have the chrome look, and I like the body-side moldings.

At the price of these vehicles, I would like to have been able to order a "less chrome" option. I would have sprung for it, as long as I could get the polished 18 inch wheels.

Re: Facination with chrome on the WK2

I like the chrome. I don't think it's too much at all. Not like the days of Chrome front and rear bumpers. I think it helps with he "chiseled" profile and classes it up. Great for taking beautiful women to dinner with and dancing, then pulling up to the office board meetings in. No chrome to me makes it looks more juvenile, "everyday utility."

Re: Facination with chrome on the WK2

if you like chrome, buy it or add it. If you don't like it, don't buy it or strip it. Easy. Right? I like it and the Summit was for me. Not fascinated with chrome. I like the look. Btw, not all my cars have as much chrome. So what? And I got the V6. Oh my. Hey, buy what you like and be happy.
