So are these 15s with the new paint system that have all the bugs in the paint? Is that when all these issues started?

Re: factory paint defect?

In all of the GM Bodyshops that I had worked in, during inspection after the vehicle had been fully painted if anything was noticed it had to go back in for either repaint of a panel or even the whole thing. Its possible that the vehicle was painted fully by robot then a section was repaired at the factory by hand. The robots are perfect from vehicle to vehicle with very little variation. If its repaired by hand its very difficult to get the metallic flakes to line up in the same pattern as a robot. Its especially noticeable on some makes on parts of the vehicle that pre-painted at the vendor such as a bumper cover or ground effects where as the doors and hood are all painted with the body-in-white.

factory paint defect?

I'm pretty sure my previous red pearl 14 gc crd was from the same paint system and it also has 2 pimple type defects but straight as an arrow othewise, no orange peel or light/dark spots. Grey seems to be a problem color for chrysler, durango, srt, everyone battles the same issue. Guess painting crew/maintenance is sleeping over there. From reading this has been a problem for at least a few years now. Guess i come from a different planet, no way i would want my work to look like that. Not sure what flips me out more, the paint job and chryslers lack of interest in fixing the problem (at the factory) or lack of customer support.

Jeep "upgraded" their paint shop towards the end of 2014 so depending on the build date deterimes if you were painted with the old sytem or the new. Was wondering if the bugs started showing up in the paint more after they upgraded or if it improved. Mine is two years old now and it has some of the orange peel effect but no bugs.

Re: factory paint defect?

I have a 2015 with orange peel, 2 specks of dirt, and a small dent. Has anyone color sanded the orange peel? I have done vehicles I have painted, but never one factory painted. I have heard factory clear is put on thin.

Re: factory paint defect?

I'd be scared to wet sand and buff it out. I just don't think there is enough clear coat to work with. Take it to a body shop and see if they would attempt it. Odds are no. Maybe they could measure the thickness of it and give you a definite answer.

Re: factory paint defect?

I'd called Jeep and raised heck with them about the paint, Get it milled before you start wet sanding if there less than 8 mils then don't attempt to sand it and burn through the clear, Call the Jeep 800 number and get a case number, they have got to fix this crap and Mrs.Johnson at Jeep told me that customers never complain about the paint so there nothing for Jeep to fix, So PLEASE call the and start a case!!!!!!

Sounds like the same mentality I'm receiving about the transmission in my SRT with a clunky 6-5 downshift. Apparently all jeeps do this because it was designed that way.
